Detective Dourif started asking questions. Yelena was first asked how she became friends with Anna and how she knew her.

Yelena said, "I am Anna's classmate and we met on the first day of college."

She added, "Paul met Anna in the shopping mall and fell in love; Anna introduced him; and this is how the three became friends."

Yelena was asked if she knew any person who had often been chasing Anna. She told that once Anna discussed this matter with her but she never felt anything like that.

Detective asked further what she was doing in her house when Mrs. Deborah was murdered.

"We were celebrating Anna's birthday," replied Yelena.

Yelena added that it was Anna's birthday. Mrs. Deborah brought a big cake and asked Anna to bring the knife. Anna brought it and Mrs. Deborah cut the cake. She served it and after some time when they finished eating it, Mrs. Deborah took plates to the kitchen. Paul stood up and went to backyard to take some fresh air but in the matter of the fact he wanted to smoke. Yelena went to washroom to wash her face. Mrs. Deborah was in the kitchen and she was washing the plates; when Yelena was in the washroom she heard some noise. Mrs. Deborah was yelling. When Yelena wanted to see what was happening, suddenly the lights went out!

It was a complete dark in the house. She called everyone but no one answered her. She could still hear Mrs. Deborah yelling very loudly as if she was trying to scold someone and then she cried with pain. Then lights came. All she could see was blood everywhere. She was calling Anna but she was not hearing. She followed the blood and then she discovered the dead body of Mrs. Deborah in the bathroom tub. Yelena told detective what happened that night.

Detective said, "Where was Anna?"

Yelena paused. Detective asked again where Anna was.

Yelena replied, "When I saw Mrs. Deborah's body covered with blood I shouted and rushed to Anna's bedroom; and I saw Anna; she was weeping and...she had a knife."

Detective Dourif was astonished to hear what Yelena told. She could be the killer because it can be concluded easily how Yelena told detective what happened in the house. Anna could have killed her mother. Anna had also been behaving strangely with Mrs. Deborah.

Detective Dourif wanted to hear what Paul had to tell about the incident which happened that night. He called Paul's name loudly and asked to break the silence.

Paul started to speak. He told detective that he was there to celebrate Anna's birthday and he did not kill anyone. He is innocent. Detective stopped him by saying that he was only asked to tell what happened that night.

Paul looked sweaty and appeared to be hiding something when Detective Dourif asked him if he knew anything about the person who had been chasing Anna. Paul told that there was nothing like that when he met her. Paul was asked again this time about the night when Mrs. Deborah was murdered.

Paul said, "I was with Anna and Yelena when they were celebrating the birthday."

Paul added, "Mrs. Deborah brought birthday cake but she asked Anna to fetch the knife; Anna fetched the knife but that knife was not ordinary knife because it looked big and it was certainly not the knife you would cut the cake with."

Detective was curious to hear what was next.

They finished eating cake and then they started to chit-chat with. Paul had to smoke a cigarette, therefore he went outside. He heard some noise while he was smoking outside of the house in the backyard. The noise was something very similar to breaking of glass. Suddenly lights went out.

Paul was worried and he entered in the house to find out what was going on. It was dark in the house and Paul could barely see anything. He stumbled upon a baseball bat. He took the baseball bat and started to call Anna and Yelena but they did not answer him. Paul suddenly saw a shadow running and then he hit it with the baseball bat. He missed it. He ran after the shadow and he threatened it.

The shadow disappeared or hid somewhere in the house. Paul searched rooms of the house and then suddenly lights came; he started walking silently and reached to Anna's room where Yelena was also there. Anna was weeping and she looked frightened, holding that strange knife. Yelena told him that she saw dead body of Mrs. Deborah in the bathroom tub. Paul rushed to see Mrs. Deborah's dead body. He was told about what Yelena heard when she was in the washroom and whatever she saw when lights came.

Detective Dourif heard Yelena and Paul respectively what they experienced during the incident that night. Both of them told that they could see Anna frightened but weeping and holding a knife. Detective wanted to talk to Anna before he could prepare a report. So, he asked Anna to explain the incident from beginning.

She told:

"It was my birthday. My mom arranged a small birthday party. Yelena and Paul were invited. They brought me birthday gifts and it was a beautiful night because my best friend, love of my life and my mother were there. I wish my dad was there, too. My mom never liked my friends and I really wondered how she invited them. Mom brought a cake and asked me to fetch the knife from the kitchen. I fetched it and cut the cake. Mom served the cake. Mom then took the plates after we finished eating. We were enjoying the night.

Paul stood up and went outside.

Yelena wanted to wash her face, so I gave her the direction.

I also went to my bedroom. After a few seconds I could hear my mom talking to someone. It was not Paul, neither Yelena. It was someone else.

Suddenly I heard my mom argue with someone and the mom cried with pain. When I wanted to see who it was and what was going on,the lights went out. I slowly walked and wanted to reach to the kitchen. I stumbled upon a body. Then lights came and all I could see the body of my mother covered with blood. Then I could hear someone run. I was terrified and I rushed towards my bedroom and hid under the bed."

Detective Tom Eliot was also there during the conversation with them. Detective Eliot could not believe what he heard.
