[ eleven ]
Evelyn.
The sheets felt strangely cold as they brushed against my skin, and this mere unfamiliarity caused my senses to become more and more apprehensive of the things around me. I couldn't help but toss restlessly on the mattress, my body shifting from one side of the bed to the other. My mind suddenly began to decipher cluttered thoughts; thoughts that would soon lead me to think of...
No.
I was on my bed - I had to be.
A familiar scent from the sheets slowly enveloped my senses and it continued to linger until I was at complete ease. It was sweet and mild, and for some reason, it reminded of my past; my childhood. These bits of memories from when I was a little girl suddenly flashed at the back of my mind. I felt an overwhelming mix of emotions churn within me, and... I wasn't really sure how else I could describe the feeling... I just was really... happy. It was amazing how memories from my past could easily affect me.
Before I knew it, the unwanted thoughts from a while back were brushed off, and I was convinced that I didn't need to worry about anything anymore. I was safe.
It was like watching it all on this big movie screen. Each played memory felt so real and vivid; like it was still happening. The sound of a little girl's laughter echoed all over, and I let myself drown in that piece of bliss for a while because I knew that that precious smile had belonged to me once.
As I continued to watch the pieces of my past, I felt like time had been flying too fast. I was becoming less of a little girl and more of a woman. My eyes dampened at some point, and I was sure that this weren't tears of happiness. I was doleful with what I was seeing. The happy girl I used to see was now a miserable woman. Eventually, her hair turned grey and her skin wrinkled. She tried to put on a smile, but no matter how hard she tried, all I could see was a wary, old woman.
I didn't want to be that woman; miserable and alone.
I will never be that woman.
This couldn't be a memory. Because if that was me I was watching, then that woman wasn't from my past but from my future.
For a while there, everything froze. The old woman stared right back at me, her eyes filled with regret and... something else I could not quite figure out. It was as if she was trying to tell me something; something very important. Her entire body was still, let alone the necklace that was slowly falling from around her neck. It was a chained and tied to it was an amulet. I watched it as it found its way on the ground.
