11 years later
"Kayla! We're going shopping...wanna come?" Jasmine asked. Kayla, now 17, shook her head.
"No, I have to study for the history final....maybe later." She said concentrating on her book.
Her high school was on an island off the coast of Japan. She hadn't made any friends over the years and it was all Misaki's fault. Jasmine was just being nice to her because her boyfriend was a close family friend. Misaki was always there for her until he found a gang of boys to hang out with.
"They get me, and you don't." He said to her as he left.
"Wait! Misaki!" She cried out as he left, the door slamming behind him. She remembered crying so much. Kayla shook her head, she couldn't dwell on that now....she had a test in the morning. She studied the thick volume and checked the clock.
"Huh, 11: 26...I should go to bed." She said to herself as she yawned. She pulled her sheets down so she could get in and turned off her lamp. Moonlight seeped in from her window and cast an eerie glow in her room. She pulled Wally, her manatee plushy, close to her chest. She got it from Misaki on her last birthday with him. She turned her head and closed her heavy eyes.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Test Morning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"When did the Hashiroma Turf War happen?" Kayla's professor drawled on.
'April 26, 1984 at 12:00 am' Kayla wrote on her paper. After four whole hours of this crap, the bell rang.
"Thank god it's the end of school." Jasmine whispered. Kayla shrugged and put all her books in her bag. She was almost to her dorm when she remembered that she forgot to give the teacher her test.
"Fuck!" She yelled and raced to the main school. She met the history teacher out of his classroom.
"Sir! I forgot to give this to you!" She handed him her test.
"I'm sorry Miss Bowman, but I can't take this. You could of cheated." He looked at Kayla with empathy.
"But sir! I would never cheat! I'm a good student!" She cried.
"Sorry but rules are rules, you can retake it on Saturday." Her teacher patted her on her back. She hung her head low as she walked into the school plaza.
"Come and fight me you bastard!" A boy with reddish brown hair yelled at a black haired boy.
"Yata! You'll get yourself killed!" A boy with blonde hair shouted.
"I'll be fine, stop being a bitch!" Yata yelled at his comrade. Kayla was so transfixed with the fight she didn't see anything coming at her. Getting on his skateboard, he didn't know he was heading straight for Kayla.
"Shit!" Yata swore as he swerved away from her, but as he turned, one of his skateboard wheels hit a rock and send him flying.
"Oh my god! Are you okay?" She asked and extended her hand. He looked into her eyes and froze. It was her. He slapped her hand away.
"I'm fine." He mumbled and pulled his beanie to hid his face. She looked at him with uncertainty.
"Okay then..." she rubbed her hand until the stinging subsided.
"I see you met a friend there Mi...." the black haired boy started but was stopped by a near-hit of Yata's baseball bat.
"Don't you fucking dare, traitor." Yata yelled. The raven haired boy fixed his glasses and out of no where shot something at Kayla. She stood there frozen to the ground, what was the point of moving? She didn't have any friends, and the one she did have ditched her for the "cooler" guys. She blinked slowly and waited for whatever it was to hit her.
"Move!" Yata yelled and pushed her out of the way. Kayla saw that the weapon hit Yata in the shoulder. She pushed herself on her knees.
"Why did you save me? I'm worthless...I can't even keep one friend." She grabbed the edges of her skirt and crumpled them up. Tears fell down her face and made dents in the dirt. Yata looked back at her and immediately looked away, she was crying. He made her cry.
"Look what you did? You made the poor girl cry Mi-Sak-I." The raven haired boy said in a taunting voice. Kayla's eyes widened as she heard Misaki's name.
"M...Misaki?" Kayla started to cry again. Misaki , nicknamed Yata, didn't even look at her.
"Shut the fuck up traitor." He said to the black haired boy.
"I have a name, Saruhiko, you should use it." Saruhiko said cooly. Getting a grip, Kayla stepped out in front of the feuding boys.
"Stop. You both are going against school policy. First off, do you even have passes?" Kayla snapped. Surprise entered Saruhiko's eyes as the girl in front of him, who was crying a second ago, suddenly start to yell at him.
"Well, umm..." the raven haired boy stumbled over his words.
"Second, weapons are forbidden on school premises." She yelled at them.
"And third, you tried to commit murder, as you already probably know, this is a felony and can be punishable by a fine. So you could either, go before I call the police or I'll take it in my own hands and whip your sorry ass...your choice." Kayla took a threatening step forward. Saruhiko smirked and walked away.
"I wouldn't want you to whip my...how do you put it?...sorry ass? See ya, Misaki." Saruhiko left with a smile.
"Come back here I wasn't done with y...." Misaki started but was stopped by Kayla's slap.
"What the hell was that for?" He asked as he rubbed his cheek.
"That was for 3 fucking years that you left me to be with him!?" Kayla pointed to the blonde one.
"Yata! You had a girlfriend?" The blonde one said.
"We weren't together!" They snarled at him simultaneously.
"Okay...after you finish with your not-girlfriend find me at the bar.
Misaki nodded and looked back at the fuming Kayla.
"You don't know anything." Misaki said with slight venom.
"I know enough!" She snapped.
"Whatever." Misaki rolled his eyes.
"Whatever? Whatever?!" Kayla flung her fist at his face but he caught it. He narrowed his eyes at Kayla and gripped her fist tighter.
"I'm leaving, and I suggest that you don't come looking for me." He let go and turned his back on her.
"Why? At least tell me that." She said, fighting the urge to yell at him. He stopped but didn't turn to her.
"I'm dangerous Kayla." Misaki said and left her again.
"No, not again." She thought to herself.
"Misaki!" She flung herself at him. Her arms wrapped around his waist.
"Please....can we just talk?" She asked, tightening her grip. He sighed and rolled his eyes.
"Fine." He said and let her lead the way. She gripped his arm tightly as she led him to the girl's dorm. Her room, number 647, was clean but had some dust on her childhood pictures.
"This is comfy...I guess." He said as she began to make some tea.
"Are you kidding me? Dammit, every time." Kayla yelled from the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" Misaki jumped up.
"Damn me and my shortness." She tried to grab the mint leaves from the back of the cupboard. Misaki snorted as he stood in the doorway and saw her struggle.
He walked over to her and lifted her up.
"There we go, thanks Misaki! Or do you go by the name Yata these days?" She placed the leaves gently in her kettle.
"Misaki....people just call me Yata when enemies are around." Misaki said looking at what she was doing.
"Oh...so you joined a gang?" Kayla asked.
"Umm...not exactly." He said as she put water in the kettle.
"What do you mean?" She asked turning around to face him and noticed his shoulder.
"Shit, you should have told me that you were hurt." Kayla said, worry in her eyes.
"It's not that bad..." he winced as he moved it.
"A huh, sure Misaki. Get on my bed and take your shirt off." She said in a demanding way.
"W...Why?" He asked.
"You're so weird, why do you think?" Kayla snapped as she grabbed her first aid kit.
"Oh." Misaki said and a tint of red entered his cheeks. He slowly took off his shirt and laid on her bed. His back was criss crossed with scars and bruises dotted his sides. She gently slid her fingers on them.
"What're ya doing?" He asked nervously.
"How did you get these?" She asked softly. His honey colored eyes looked into her chocolate ones.
"Turf battles." He said and saw her expression change from her curious gaze to a sad one.
"You shouldn't be fighting alone like today...it can turn fatal in a blink of an eye Misaki." She put some rubbing alcohol in his wound. He tensed up and balled up his fists.
"Sorry." She wrapped the gash in his shoulder.
"It's fine." He said, gritting his teeth. The kettle whistle signaled that the tea was ready. She poured the liquid into porcelain teacups with light blue dragons on it.
"Drink this, it'll help with the pain." She handed him is cup. He drank it in one gulp. His pained face relaxed and he asked for another cup.
"Fine, but you'll need to pee at the worst times." She warned his as she poured him another cup.
"So, what have you done for the past few years?" He asked while slurping his drink.
"Nothing, fun that is. I've been studying for this big history test that was today, but after I finished my exam, I forgot to give it to my professor...I'll have to take that fucking test on Saturday." She groaned.
"How long did it take?" Misaki asked.
"Four whole hours." She drank some tea.
"That sounds really boring, no wonder you're crazy." The boy snorted as Kayla punched his arm.
"Stop being an ass!" She snapped.
"Okay! Sorry." He said, still smiling.
"So, enough about me.....what the hell happened today?" She set her tea cup on its little plate.
"What? I don't know what you're talking about." Misaki drained his cup again.
"Stop being a bitch and spill it! I know you know what I'm referring too!" Kayla slammed the cup on her table. The porcelain cracked and crumbled into pieces. The remaining tea splattered everywhere. Misaki jumped, she wasn't this scary 3 years ago.
"Okay! Jesus, you could have just said it was the fight." He said, growing nervous. She calmed down and a pleasant smile replaced her pursed lips.
"Please, tell me how this started." She said with fake coolness.
"Saruhiko of the blue clan betrayed us." He said simply.
"Blue clan? What the fuck is that?" Kayla asked. He said.
"Oh, I forgot the normal human society didn't know about the clans." He said.
"Normal human society?" She asked."I'm part of the seven clans...they control Japan." He said. She shook her head in disbelief.
"I'll prove it!" His body started to burn up. She shrieked in surprise. What seemed like red flames licked the surrounding furniture but didn't burn anything up.
"That's so cool! Can I touch it?" Kayla asked and he nodded. She gently stuck her hand in his aura. It swallowed her hand but nothing burned.
"Shit! Is this magic?" She asked, studying the aura.
"Yeah, my king gave it to me...that's the power he has." Misaki said with a grin.
"What are the clans and kings?" Kayla asked.
"Well, there are seven clans...Silver, gold, blue, green, colorless, grey, and red...I'm part of that clan. We're called HOMRA." Misaki said.
"Oh, so why were you fighting a blue clan dude?" She gave him a curious look.
"We were looking for a boy, his name is Yashiro Isana, when the traitor showed his ugly face to us." Misaki said.
"What did Saruhiko do?" Kayla asked, gently.
"He was part of HOMRA before he joined Scepter 4. He betrayed my king and shared secrets with the blue king." He replied.
"That bastard." Kayla muttered. His smug smirk as he walked away made her blood boil.
"Glad you think that way Kayla." Misaki grinned. Kayla blushed, she didn't realise she said that aloud.
"So, when am I going to meet your friends? Or will you just disappear again?" Kayla asked. Misaki gave her a look.
"They might....umm..." Misaki started.
"Laugh at you? Is your reputation that important?" She sighed.
"No...I mean yeah but...maybe after your test on Saturday. I'll pick you up, okay?" He said.
"Okay! See you later Misaki!" She hugged him and let him leave.
"Oh god...what have I done?" He face palmed himself as he left Kayla's building.
