His eyes were dark and tormented. He was lying on the grass underneath the big oak overlooking the Wilkshire Park lake. She could tell just by looking at him that he was hurting.
"Are you okay?" Her voice was light but concerned.
"Yeah, why're ya asking?" His voice was drenched in sadness.
"You don't look too good, tell me and maybe I can help." She said. He sighed and a tear rolled down his cheek.
"My cat ran away! She was my only friend!" He sobbed. She fished around her pocket and grabbed a tissue.
"Here, we can find her just don't cry please, I hate it when people cry." She extended her hand. He wiped his streaming nose and grabbed her hand.
"My name's Kayla, by the way." She smiled which made his blush.
"Mi..Misaki." He studdered. She giggled and he smiled slightly.
"Well, where did you last see your cat?" She asked, getting serious.
"Umm....she was in my house then she jumped out of the window, so I don't know where she is." He started to tear up.
"Is there a tree underneath that window?" Kayla asked. Misaki nodded.
"Did you check there?" She asked with a smirk. His faced turned a ruby red.
"No." He mumbled.
"There you go, if you find her I'll be at the apartment complex at the end of Redleaf Avenue!" She smiled at him one last time and ran away. He grinned to himself.
"Thank you, Kayla." he thought as he raced to see if she was right.
. . . . . . . . . . . . 2 hours later . . . . . . . . . . .
Misaki ran to her apartment complex. He knocked from door to door asking for Kayla until one of them opened their door and said they knew where she lived. They pointed to a dumpy looking apartment across the way. He nodded his thanks and ran over. He rang the doorbell.
"What the hell do you want?" A drunk man asked, his beer bottle in his hand swinging around.
"I was looking for Kayla, umm I think she lives here." Misaki said.
"Brat! Someone is here for ya!" He yelled and a terrified looking Kayla walked into view.
"I'm sorry Mr. Reagan." She said.
"How many times do I have to tell you to call me Daddy!?" He slapped her face. She held in her cries and grabbed Misaki's hand and led him to her room. Misaki was so shocked at what he saw he forgot to yell at the man. Kayla locked the door behind them quickly and burst into tears. The tears made tracks in her coverup and her bruises started to show.
"Misaki! I can't do this anymore! He gets so drunk and he hurts me." She cried even more. He grabbed her instinctively and pulled her close.
"I guess it's my turn to help you, huh?" He asked. She pressed her head against his chest.
"But what can be do? We're children and he's older...they'll never believe us." She said, her voice muffled by his clothes. Misaki thought for a second but he got an idea.
"I think I've got a plan." He said, he felt her shift to look at his face. Hope filled her chocolate colored eyes.
