While this one may not seem like much, it is important
Pick a genre that you are absolutely comfortable writing about.

"But I thought it was better to write outside your comfort zone. To get new experiences."

That is absolutely true. But don't expect it to get many views until you have written that genre a couple time.

You have to be able to write something good. You want your story to look like it was written with passion. That you enjoyed writing it. Your emotions can be told just by reading your story. If you aren't completely comfortable with the genre of story your writing, then that just leads to it being half-donkey.

Your readers are drawn to the level of effort and detail. For example, say you were interested in fantasy. Would you read this:

I went to the red room. I walked I. And saw the apple and took it. All of a sudden, unexpectedly, It was was a teleportation apple. It was amazing. It took me all the way to Wisteria. The land was a nice shade of green....

Or would you rather read this:

I walked into a room that was a crimson red. To be honest, it gave me the chills. It was empty except for a pillar that was holding a single red apple. I decided that I had nothing to loose so I took a step towards said pillar and picked up the apple. All of a sudden I felt swirling and I didn't know what was happening. It finally hit me that this was an apple that was teleporting me to the land called Wisteria. Wisteria is the land of wizards and witches. Its where they live peacefully. The grass and flowers were a perfect, bright shade and the sky was cloudless with the sun beaming down. In all honesty, it was a beautiful sight.

Wow, that was long for a lazy person like me. Anyways, if you aren't interested in fantasy, you're not going to know how to write it or what magical aspects to put detail in.

So to retell what my point was, write a story in a genre your comfortable with because if your comfortable with it, you will want to put better details in and make it fill with emotions. Making the reader want to continue reading.
