Finally. I'd escaped from my bit--witch of a stepmother. She'd had the grand plan to marry me off to a ninety year old. I'm nineteen.

I ran to the harbor in our little port town called Shadow. There were ships bustling about everywhere, and the simple dress I'd donned to escape quickly wouldn't disguise me here. I'd have to dress as a man to board a ship and leave for Shadow was an island, and no one ever escaped unscathed.

It was a lovely, windy day, so there were clothes filled lines all about the village. I crept up to the closest one and took a pair of trousers and a hat, and then I ran. I stepped behind a shed and pulled the pants on atop my dress. Then I pulled the top of the dress out enough to make it look like a puffy shirt, and conceal my figure. Finally, I donned the boots and stuffed my hair in the hat. I scuffed my face up a little too, with the help of some dirt.

"Take on a new crew member?" I asked a man who looked suspiciously like a pirate.

"Aye. If you don't mind veering on the wrong side of the law. You look stupid enough to. Trustworthy, I'd venture too." He grinned and led me to a big ship with black sails.

Off we went.
