" BEEP, BEEP, BEEP"
I hit my alarm clock with frustration as I realise that it's 6 am on a Monday and I have to go to uni today. I wish I could go back to sleep, but if I do, I'll be late and unfortunately, once I’m up, I’m up. As if he can sense his impending breakfast, Butters jumps onto the bed, rubbing against my leg, frantically mewing. I stumble my way out of bed, and stagger into the kitchen, putting on the kettle for my morning cup of tea. Caffeine is a requirement if I am to survive a day at the bustling hellhole that is UWA. Thankfully, I'm in the last year of study for a Bachelor of Science degree. Somehow, I decided that psychology science and microbiology were a good combination for a double major. Somehow, I'm also managing to complete an online degree in investigative journalism. I'm still indecisive as to what career I want. I can't decide between forensic science, criminal psychology and investigative journalism. As I pour my tea, Butters' mewing becomes louder so I wander to the pantry and grab a can of cat food, opening it and dumping it into a bowl. I turn on the TV to see a breaking story bulletin flash across the screen. I listen intently as the newsreader begins to speak.
" In a breaking story, a body has been found at the war memorial at Kings Park this morning. According to witnesses, the unidentified young woman was found dead. The body was found by maintenance workers early this morning. Police are treating the death as a homicide but are declining to comment further". I sit stunned for a moment, pondering. Murders are relatively rare in Perth, let alone the killing of a young woman. I jolt back to reality, and begin to get ready for the day.
Seven hours later, as I leave my final lecture of the day, my usually quiet phone buzzes to life. I fumble around in my bag, bringing the phone out just as the ringtone stops. I see that I have a missed call from Finn, my best friend of 10 years and an up-and-coming detective. I swipe my phone open and call him back. He picks up within 10 seconds
'Hey dude...you called?'
" Hey Kat.... nice to talk to you too"
"Sure. Whatever' I tease him 'what can I do for ya Finn?"
'I'm guessing you've heard of that murder?"
" Woman in Kings Park?"
"Yeah. Anyway, sorry to give you the bad news but it's someone we know"
My stomach drops. "Who?"
"I'm really sorry Kat, but it's Kelsey"
I freeze in shock. Kelsey was one of my good friends in high school. I haven’t spoken to her for months. She headed of to Melbourne for Uni and hasn't been back in town since Christmas last year." what? I didn't even know she was in town"
"Apparently she was visiting her sister"
" Can I call you back later? I need some time to process this"
"Sure, take your time. I'll call you later"
As I sit on the train home, I think about Kelsey and her family. I can't imagine what they're going through. She was only 21. Most importantly, I wonder...why Kelsey? Who would want to harm her? She was vibrant, full of life and a very talented musician. She had no enemies. You couldn't help but feel comfortable with her confident attitude and caring, compassionate nature.
As I walk to the door of my apartment, I'm surprised to see Finn sitting there. Until I see the Pizza and the tub of Ice cream.
"Hey Kat. Thought you could use some cheering up" he gave me a small smile.
"You are the best.friend.ever." I
" I figured you would also want to be filled in on the case."
