As I walked into the police station, thoughts were rushing through my head as to what Finn could have to tell me that was so urgent. I walked to the reception to ask for directions. Before I could speak, the woman looked up at me and spoke “Katherine Hunter?”
“Yes” I replied politely, internally cursing Finn. He knows I detest my first name. Katherine is a name for prim and proper young ladies. Something I most definitely am not.
“ Walk down the corridor, take a left at the end and fourth door on the right” she spoke curtly before returning to her work.
“Thank you very much” I spoke before heading down the corridor.
Upon arrival to the room, I opened the door to find a small labyrinth of cubicles, each filled with officers typing, talking on the phone or reading over paperwork. I walk to the nearest and knock.
“Yes?” a young man looks at me, surprised to see a young woman in his cubicle. “ I’m looking for Finn Jones”
“ So I’m guessing you must be the famous Katherine Hunter”
“ Yes, but call me Kat” I smile. God dammit I’m going to have to smack the shit out of Finn. He’s doing this in purpose.
“Head down this aisle and take a left at the end. They’re in the conference room.” He replies with a smile.
“Thanks.” I nod gratefully at him and turn to leave
“Always willing to help a pretty lady” he grins. I wave politely and start to walk down the aisle, thinking of all the ways I could punish Finn for being such a little shit.
5 minutes later, I arrive at the conference room and knock on the door. Finn opens and grins at me. “About time Katherine” he smirks annoyingly. That does it. I smack him around the head and glare at him “Never.Call.Me.Katherine.”
“Awwww why not Katherine?”
“ If you don’t quit it I will personally ensure that you get a kick to the balls so hard you wont want to sit down for a week” I smirk at him and wait for him to some back with something”
“Fuck you Kat. We both know you love me too much to hurt me” he changes to his puppy face. He knows I can’t resist the puppy face. I sigh with resignation. “Fine. Now if you don’t mind, I’d like to hear what this development in the case is.” I push the door open and walk in to find 3 amused faces grinning at me.
“ Yup she’s just as feisty as I remember” one guy pipes up. I stare at him in shock.
“Jack what the fuck are you doing here?! Last time I saw you, you were on track to law school!”
“ Changed my mind, much to the chagrin of my mother” he stands up, walking over to hug me. I hug him back, grinning. “ Looks like someone’s been working out”
“ They don’t let skinny runts into the force” he replies playfully
“ Then how the hell did they let Finn in?” I tease, smirking. Finn narrows his eyes at me and pouts. “ I thought we just agreed you love me too much to hurt me” I blink innocently.
“ Did we just? Oh I must have forgotten” I pull an innocent little grin before turning back to the other two men. “ Please excuse these two children, I’m Kat Hunter.”
“ Nah it’s alright. Boys will be boys. I’m detective Harris” a kind looking man steps forward, offering his hand. I shake it and turn to the other man. On cue, he offers his hand and I shake it politely. “I’m deputy detective Andrews. Pleased to meet you” he grins before his face becomes solemn. “ We’d better get cracking on this” he gestures to a pile of papers. We all take a seat as he hands a stapled pile to each of us. Finn takes the lead and begins speaking. “Kelsey James aged 21. 5 foot 8 with blonde hair and blue eyes. Found deceased at Kings park at approximately 5am. Time of death is estimated to be approximately 12 am. Cause of death is blood loss due to slash wounds on wrists and neck, and a single stab wound to the heart. Toxicology results show high levels of Ketamine, in her system, a powerful drug commonly used in date rape. Examinations show she was sexually assaulted pre-mortem.” I cringe, thinking of what the poor girl was subjected to, but find a little comfort at the knowledge that she was unconscious. Finn continues “ examinations also show that Kelsey was approximately 14 weeks pregnant” I gasp. To my knowledge, Kelsey had never even had a boyfriend. I turned to Finn “ so what’s this development you were talking about?”
“ Kat, you’re not going to like this. It’s pretty bad”
“ Finn just tell me. I don’t think anything could shock me anymore” His expression was grim. “ There was a note left in her hand.” I raise my eyebrows.
“ A note? What kind of note?”
“ It’s on parchment, and as far as I can tell it’s been written on a typewriter. The lab’s running tests to confirm”
“What did it say?”
“ K is for Kelsey. K is for Kill”
“So she was targeted?”
“ I’m afraid it looks that way”
“Was there anything else left with the body?”
“ A dried flower, apparently a type of pink rose”
“Anything else?”
“There was no blood at the scene and the body had been cleaned, pointing towards the theory that she had been killed elsewhere and dumped at Kings Park. Ligature marks on her wrists and ankles suggest she was bound with some type of rope. The lab is running tests on the fibres to identify their composition” I begin to take notes in my spiral-bound notebook, reserved only for my biggest articles. “ What’s appropriate for me to publish in my article?”
“ Just judge it by what you think needs to be known without being too detailed and risk distressing people” fin replies. I nod, understanding exactly what he means.” I know you want me to help with the case and all, but is it ok if I take this home and come back tomorrow? I have uni this afternoon and I need time to sit and relax and process all of this. I have a few ideas but I just need space to think”
“ Sure Kat. Anything you can give us is helpful so just take your time” we both stand up and he walks over to give me a hug. As he embraces me he whispers in my ear “ you, me and pizza at your place, 6:30 tonight?” I nod and smile. I could really use the company and he’s my best friend. He knows me better than my own parents and he pays for the pizza. What more could I ask for?
As I leave the station and begin walking to catch the train, I begin thinking about the psychology behind the note and the rose. Pink roses symbolise purity- could the dead rose symbolise a loss of purity? The note means the killer wants recognition- perhaps pointing to a narcissistic personality? Could the murder be religiously motivated? As I board the train at Perth station, I sit down and make a few notes in my notebook. When I get to my station, I look at my watch and realise it’s eleven o’clock. Shit. I have uni in two hours. Hurriedly, I start walking to my apartment because I still need to finish an essay, do some tidying and be back at the station to catch the train and then the bus to get to uni on time. All in an hour and a half. Let the race begin.
I'm sorry it took so long to update! I was on holiday and I had no reception or wifi. anyhow, please tell me what you think so far xx
