I sit quietly against the smooth white wall, reading my book as freshmans pass by. I can hear snipets of their conversations.
"I wonder if the lunch food is good here..."
"Hey, do you wanna meet up at the mall and get some stuff before the school year officially starts?"
I don't hear what the other person says about going to the mall. They're already exiting the building, laughing without a care in the world; leaving me in the building by myself.
Such happy friends... sometimes I wish I had some. I'm sort of friendly with my old friends from middle school, Weiss and Ruby, but the two started dating a little while ago (Weiss is a year older than Ruby; and a year younger than me; so Ruby is an 8th grader this year and Weiss is a freshman.) -- and they don't have time to make any plans involving me. Not complaining though. I'm glad they're happy together.
What I'm saying more or less is that I'm a loner. Hopefully I won't be for much longer.
Cutting off my thoughts, I return to my book, The Summer I Wasn't Me. It's definitely one of my favorites. I've read it so much, the ends of the pages are curled. Just as I start getting sucked into the story again, my phone buzzes. The screen reads 'Orientation'. Yes, I set a reminder for myself. Sometimes I get so caught up in my books I completely forget about everything else. What can I say? The world in the pages is much better than the one I live in. Reluctantly, I close my book, put it in my plain black bag, and stand up; ready for action. Or as close to action as I'll get. It's not like I'm going to be all friendly and extroverted and try to hit it off with some popular girl who'll raise my social status when the school year starts...
But then I realize.
I have absolutely no idea where I'm going.
And I'm out of cellular data.
That's not important, but still.
I go out of my way to set a reminder for myself, but don't know where to go? I'm such an airhead.
"Hey... sorry, but... can I ask you something?" I hear someone say behind me, the sudden question making me jump out of my skin.
I turn around, and there's a girl. I immediately avert my gaze to on a spot on the floor, nervous. "Sure." I reply, hoping I don't sound rude.
"Could you help me find where orientation is being held? I knew, but then forgot, and now I'm lost, but I saw you and thought maybe..."
My eyes drift to the girl's face. She's gorgeous; long wavy blonde hair and soft lilac eyes that stare intently into my golden eyes. I wonder if she'll be in any classes with me.
"I'm not sure where it's being held either..." I say, sincerely sorry I can't help her.
"Oh. Well at least we're lost together. I'm Yang."
"I'm Blake. Um... nice to meet you."
"Likewise. You must be a sophomore like me, right? Somehow you don't look like all the rest of the girls here." She asks.
"Yeah..." I reply.
"Uhh,,, wanna look for orientation together?"
"Sure."
The campus looked fairly large at first glance, so I'm assuming this'll take a while. But that's okay -- Yang seems nice and I have a feeling that she'll stick with me, even though we've just met. I don't mind being lost with her.
We look around the campus for about 20 minutes before giving up and collapsing on the nearest bench. Yang sighs. "It's going to be hard to find our way around on the first day if we're struggling so much already..."
"Mhm." I respond, staring at the ground once again.
"You don't talk much, do you?" She says in a teasing tone.
"I guess not..."
Yang chuckles under her breath. "Sorry, I suppose the reason we're more lost than before is me."
"No, it's fine."
"So... whatcha got in your bag?"
I reach and adjust my bag so she can see what's inside. My book, my phone, and a tuna sandwich. To my surprise, Yang's eyes light up. "I love The Summer I Wasn't Me!"
"Really!?" I exclaim, happy to find a fellow fan.
I think Yang is a potential friend.
"Yes!"
We share our thoughts on the book, giggling after almost every sentence. Like the two girls I saw earlier. Like real friends.
Or, to be more realistic, acquaintances that have a common interest.
I shouldn't assume such things.
A/N: I'm sorry this is so short! I promise the next chapters will be longer. thank you for reading and have a lovely day/night <3
