Underneath the invisible veil that George pulled away was a green, 1958, Austin Healey Sprite sports car in prime condition. It was absolutely dazzling. The paint shined in the light, the leather seats looked like nobody had ever sat on them and the windows had not one smudge. Hermione stood there in awe as the boys look to her for the reaction.
"Oh, my Merlin! This is, it's beautiful! How'd you guys get one in this state? It looks exactly like the one my dad used to drive!" Hermione's jaw was practically touching the ground and the twins looked very proud.
"We actually redid it. We took a nice car from a kind old man's hands, spruced up the paint and seats, and of course added some magic components to it," Fred was beaming. And George was attempting to stifle a laugh next to him. Fred shot him a glance that asked: "Should we tell her?" George nodded with a goofy grin to the telepathic message.
"What are you two giggling about?" she asked with a questioning smile.
"Well you see the nice old man we took the car from-" Fred couldn't finish his thought before he uncontrollably started laughing.
"Your dad 'Mione. This is your dad's old car," George said, finishing what his brother couldn't do. Her face immediately fell and so did the boys. The fear of God had struck them and they began to apologize until they were interrupted by Hermione's boisterously loud laugh.
"Oh my God! I-I can't believe guys did that. That's ridiculous! How'd you get it from him?" Hermione laughed between breaths. The twins looked stunned. They didn't expect this, they didn't really know what to expect, honestly.
"So, you're okay with this then?" Fred cautiously questioned.
"Oh, 'okay' is not the word I would use. We'll see how I feel after you tell me just exactly how you stole a sports car from my father," Hermione said with her hands on her hips and head quirked looking at them.
"Well you see Hermione, we didn't really steal the car per say-" Geroge started with a small grin, looking down at the ground.
"Just like you didn't steal your father's car a few years back?" Hermione intervened with a sarcastic look.
"Ahh but you see Granger that was for a good cause. We couldn't just leave good old Harry with those insufferable muggles. And anyway, what my brother was saying was that we didn't steal your old man's car. We arrived at his house dressed as a pair of those muggle charity workers looking for cars to give to the homeless or whatever, and we offered a number for his lovely car and he took it. So here we are with a beautiful car. Your father is very trusting and kind, Hermione. I wonder what went wrong with you," Fred said with over exaggerated hand motions and an everlasting smirk. Disregarding the last jab at her, Hermione had a baffled look plastered across her face.
"You pretended to be charity workers?" she shouted in befuddlement.
"That's worse than just stealing the car from him when he wasn't looking! You guys are, just so, I don't even know the word for it," Hermione said with a mix of laughter, astonishment, and disbelief.
"Dazzlingly handsome? Clever?"
"What about charming? Maybe that was the one you were looking for?" chimed in George. Hermione just rolled her eyes at the smiling pranksters.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Get in 'Mione. See if it brings back any childhood memories," chuckled Fred as he opened the car door for Hermione. She playfully hit him as she scooched into the center of the passenger and driver seat since this type of sports car didn't have a second row. George got into the driver's seat as Fred slide into the passenger seat and swooped his arm around Hermione's shoulder and the other across the door because 'there wasn't enough room with three people in one row' or at least that's what he told himself. Geroge started the car and as the engine turned over, he coughed
"Get a bloody room"
It was muffled by the sound of his fake cough and loud engine but they both shot George a threatening glance. Hermione once again allowed Fred's long arm to be on her and she wanted to be as secure as possible at the moment since she didn't have a seat belt and George was driving.
"You ready Granger?"
"The magical elements have been properly inspected, right?" she nervously asked.
"Of course 'Mione," Fred reassured and Hermione let out a sigh of relief, "by us!" he finished as George hit to gas and the car went flying into the air, wobbling as it flew.
After a few minutes of haphazard flying, Hermione can see the silhouette of Hogsmeade ahead of them.
"Where are we gonna park this?" she asked in an exasperated tone, "And taking off like that with unapproved machinery mixed with quite horrendous driving was incredibly irresponsible, Geroge," scolded Hermione. Fred was trying to stifle a laugh in the corner.
"Yeah, George, so very irresponsible," he laughed making 'tsk tsk' sounds towards his brother.
"Oh, you're just as immature as your brother, Fred." He stopped laughing and now it was George's turn to giggle and mock.
"Neither of you answered me, where are we gonna park?"
"Ahh, you'll see."
Hermione rolled her eyes for what felt the hundredth time today when the car took a sudden dip. Hermione alarmedly looked at Fred who had a crooked, yet worried smile, looking right back at her. He knew what was coming, George was never a good driver, so he wrapped both his arms loosely around Hermione. Before she could protest, they were heading straight into a grove of trees.
"George, are you in control of the car at all?" she shouted at him.
"Don't worry Granger, I got it." He obviously didn't, from the worried expression on him face to him pressing any button that could possibly slow the car down. Hermione sighed, wiggled an arm out of Fred's grip and pulled out her wand. She ungracefully crawled across Fred to get to the edge of the car.
"What the hell are you doing!" he yelled, tightening his grip on her waist, "You're gonna fall out!"
She ignored him and get to the side of the car, slightly hanging off until she could see the bottom of the car.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" she yelled, pointing her wand at the underneath of the car.
Suddenly the car stopped in mid air, sending Hermione flying into Fred but she leaned even further over the edge to keep the spell working which caused Fred to hold onto her even tighter if it was possible. She carefully lowered the car into a spot on the forest floor that was almost clear of any trees. Once they were safely on the ground, she got back into her seat and let out a big sigh. As she did so, Geroge started clapping. Fred sat there in awe of what she had just done, not even realizing he was still grasping onto her. Hermione was out of breath but that didn't last long.
"What the bloody hell were you two thinking! This, this," she said pointing to the car and the forest, "is why you get ministry approved machinery!" she yelled then promptly fell back in her seat.
"But we're fine now Granger, right?" George said smugly.
"Yeah thanks to me." She climbed across Fred and got out of the car and he followed.
"That was quite bloody brilliant, Granger." Fred praised and ruffled her hair with his arm in its now normal spot, across her shoulders. She simply nodded.
"Who's ready for some Huneydukes?"
Hermione rolled her eyes for the 101st time for that day as she walked between two boys to get some well deserved sweets.
