Chapter 3
The Peacekeepers grabbed us. They didn't arrest us, I think its mandatory, maybe some other tributes tried to escape before. They escorted us into the Justice Building. It was huge, velvet carpets, fancy sofas, you name it."Three minutes!" the peackeeper ordered. I wasn't sure what to say: " Hey dad, yeah, don't route for me 'cause I'm just going to die anyways, because I can't kill Katniss, who is the love of my life coincidentally " I waited for one minute, waiting for someone to come through those doors. Finally father comes rushing through the doors, " Peeta! Son!!! " he hugs me, no, he suffocates me. "I'm fine, I'm fine" I say blandly.
"Listen son, you'll get through this, I want you to come back as a victor. Make the district proud!" father says motivating me.
Quiet footsteps approach the door. It was mother. "Looks like District 12 finally might have a victor" mother said scornfuly. My face lit up with excitement and father looked proud too. "Thanks, mom!" I said pleasefully. "You thought I meant you, I was talking about the girl. I swear I've seen her once. She was looking through our bins about five years ago. Yeah! That was her!" mother remebered
Looking at father she continued "Definitely Seam. You know how I feel about those Seam kids, I hate those brats. But do you know why she has a better chance of beating you.She hunts. Yes. I know you buy her squirrels." Father looked at the ground pretending that mother never said that.
"Those Seam kids grow up to be coal miners. They have to be tough. They do not spend all day drawing stupid pictures. That girl is more of a man than you will ever be." mother hissed. In retrospect I should have seen that coming, I mean when would mother say something good about me? And today of all days. Thats my problem, my hopes are always too high. I need to lower my expectations of my mother, but her expectations of me have always been high. I I have never lived up to her dream of having that perfect son. Father looked at me sympathetically "I actually visited her, Katniss, was her name. Gave her some cookies."
"Wait. You went to see her before you came to see me?" I asked slightly puzzled.
"Peeta thats not the point. Be careful, won't you? Your brothers wish you good luck. Goodbye son." Father said tearfully as the Peacekeepers returned. "Time's up!" the peackeeper ordered in a hard voice. Mother was the first one to leave. Father on the other hand looked glum and grief-stricken.
We got into a car, it was a short ride from the Justice Building to the train station. I'm not a very good actor, I barely managed to stop crying. I am so pathetic. Katniss was just sitting there, emotionless. Maybe that will be her srategy in the games, so she doesn't appear to be a weakling.
At the train station there are a swarm of reporters, the flashes of the cameras make me blink so much, that all the pictures they have taken of me are probably all with my eyes closed, and tears dripping from my face . For a few finutes we had to stand at the doorway of the train so that the reporters can take last minute pictures of us. Personally, I am not very photogenic, hece the blinking. But I'm not shy either, I consider myself a good public speaker. So I should be quite good if we have to do any interviews.
After a few minutes we are let into the train as the doors close behind us. I have never been on a train, (travel between the districts is forbidden), so I did not know what to expect. The speed the train was going at was amazing, 250 miles per hour! It will take us less than a day to get to the Capitol.
The train is very high class. We were given our own chambers, dressing area and a private bathroom. Back home we only have one bathroom, that we all share. After my brothers are finished in the bathroom, its left looking like a pigsty. So a private bathroom, was a privellage. I am stunned by the different people in each district we pass. It is so different from home. In district 11, we passed orchards, fruit trees and children, collecting crops. That is something we wouldn't see in our district, the kids in our district don't go to work until they are 18, because thats when they are old enough to work in the mines. We also passed districts 10, 2 , 9 , 5 and 1. Effie Trinket,(she corrected) said that the journey from District 12 to the Capitol will only take less than a day. Thats quite overwhelming considering the distance we travelled. Effie told us that we had to be ready for supper in an hour, she told us to do anything we want, wear anything. I open my drawers to find, fine clothes made with posh materials, that I don't know the name of. I guess this is their way of trying to get us to relax. Unfortunately this is just a cunning reminder that we are in the custody of the Capitol.
