I'm just a regular Walmart worker. I got the job about six months ago. Strangest thing is I applied at giant eagle and Walmart but Walmart got back to me first, but it seems just like yesterday I just had my interview. I went in nicely dressed and I was asked a few questions like:
Have I had retail experience?
Have I had a recent felony?
Was I ever caught doing anything unethical at my last job?
Stuff like that. I did have one question that made the interviewer laugh a little. I had heard on the news a couple days ago that some of the Walmart stores were closing down and asked if this one would too. The interviewer chuckled and said.
"Well those Walmart stores are closing down because of bad sales. This one has good sales so there's no need to worry." After that question he told me I got the job, and honestly I was a little excited. It had about 3 months since my summer job so I was pretty happy getting a job, hopefully a more stable and permanent job. Not that I plan to permanently stay but more stay till I have the funds for college. I'd be working on cap team two. What my basic tasks are were to help unload the trucks, stock product and pull the pallets out to the floor for midnight shift to work. Something I can easily do. My supervisors who's names I'll disclose for identity reasons, were awesome. They were kind, friendly and even talking with both of them we did share a few common interests like anime and stuff like that. About two months after I started one of them had to step down, apparently he just wanted to be a normal cap team member.. one of our own stepped up to take over. This one however..well he was harder on all us. If we didn't get the truck done he'd basically tell us we're too slow and had to pick up the pace..but I digress. About a week before halloween I had let my co-manager know that I wanted to move to the frozen/dairy department. After they discussed with me my duties and my hours I was set. I had a couple days before I was officially a member of the frozen dairy team. Halloween passed and the following Monday after that I had work. I had a late night shift. 2pm-11pm, which is something I'm used to, seeing as I'm a late night person anyways. I arrived at work about a half an hour early, but that's because I take the bus to work. I sat in the lounge kinda alone in a corner. I'm not exactly the most social person at all.. about five minuets till I waited outside and clocked in soon enough. I grabbed my jacket too. Obviously it was gonna be cold, didn't wanna get frost bite. I met my department manager. She introduced herself and I introduced myself. She was pretty nice, giving me a small tour of the area and giving me my tasks. Sooner or later with the help of my coworker who also introduced himself, we got done. It was about 4 and she told me I could take my first break, and I did. I walked back to the lounge and sat in the same place I did earlier. I soon saw other people come in for their breaks. Some came over and said "hello."
Some just gave me looks which made me uncomfortable. Soon after taking my break I headed back to the cooler. To my surprise my department manager was gone. One of my coworkers had told me she leaves at about 4. Luckily she had left me a note giving me the rest of my tasks to do. One of them was to do something called "pathways." I head tilted my head. "Pathways?"
I had asked still wondering what it was.
"Oh it's something you do on the computers, you can do it either when you get time or when you get the tasks done." My coworker said.
I nodded and continued filling what was needed. Sooner or later my lunch break came and I took it. I stayed to myself during the whole break. Again as I said I'm not the most social person..so I really try to stay to myself. When I got back from my lunch I continued filling what I needed to then about 9:30 I heard something over the pa. All frozen dairy associations please report to grocery receiving for the truck. I heard that and went to where the bailer was. Some of the cap 2 associates were there. One explained all we had to do was get the pallets to either freezer. One was controlling an electric jack and unloaded the pallets from the truck and set them down in front of us so we could get them to the freezers. After we had gotten done I had continued working on filling in milk and eggs. Soon after it was time for me to clock out and I had left. The next few days had been the same. Few weeks had pass and nothing wrong, which brings me to what had happened the other day...
I come in as usual and clock in, do my work then head to my break. Did some computer work then went to my lunch break, then come back and read the note from my manager. About 10:30 is when the truck came this time. This time either most of the cap 2 associates were at lunch or called off because there wasn't many associates there. I didn't ask since it really wasn't my business. I digress, anyways we had gotten started with the truck. I had to drop off a pallet to the bakery since most of the pallet was bread and bakery items. I had walked down a hallway and came to a door that read "bakery freezer". I tried to open the door and it seemed a bit hard to open since it was frozen on the hinges, so it took a bit of force. It took a second and it finally opened and it was freezing. This is saying even with a hoodie on. I backed up a bit and put the pallet in. The strangest thing happened though.. as soon as I gotten in the freezer I heard a slam which made me jump. I looked back to see that door had shut and my heart dropped to my stomach. I went to the door and tried opening but like it was on the outside it was frozen at the hinges. I had tried as hard as I could but I still couldn't get it open. I tried banging on the door to try and see if someone heard but from what I could assume no one was around. I reached into my pocket and see if I had my phone in there but I remembered that I keep I on the charger in the lounge so it doesn't die on me on the way home, I usually listen to YouTube on the way home, so I was stuck. I contemplated what to do. An hour passed and I didn't have a clue what I could do and hypothermia was starting to set in. I started to shiver and I could feel the goosebumps starting to form. After another hour and I was now at this point was yelling for help but to no avail. My vision started to blur as i shivered harder and my hands were starting to go numb. I laid down and tried to keep as much body heat as I can. I felt my feet starting to go numb now and I shivered harder. Now I was losing hope, and heat quickly. The last thing I remember before losing consciousness was me accepting a manager position which is my interest and I fell unconscious. I had awoken later in the hospital to the beeping of the iv machine. I looked around I felt something was wrong. I still felt cold, but I was alive. I took a my arm and screamed, as it was white as snow. The doctor rushed in and had told me to calm down. As soon as I had he explained to me that a manager found me near death. They were horrified that my nose, hands and feet were frost bitten, but only had to amputate a hand. They also had explained that I still alive because the third stage of hypothermia hadn't set in but was close to. I had asked about my skin and that's where the doctor grew a bit silent. The doctor told me I had become what they could describe as a human snowman. I saw my bed was starting to freeze over.......To be continued, if a second part is what you want let me know! I'm more then happy to add more! Thanks :D
