Val is someone who no matter what if he is in the zones he knows where he his. The unsettling landscape of sand and dead bodies reminded him to live in the know for after he died there was nothing after death. Because Val had this grim outlook on all of life it made it difficult when one of his friends died. Death is the end. Then again its strange how quickly thing can change when one gets shot in the chest.
