A light...blinding beam of light shining on me...deafening screeches all around...

These were the thoughts of the squirrel as he saw the large metal mass approaching him at a deadly speed.

Is this it...? Am I going to become roadkill...?

He believed these to be his final thoughts. There was no time to react. No chance to escape this cruel fate. He had resigned himself to this fate. This end. There was a gust of air and then...

A moment passed. And then another. And one after that. The squirrel opened his eyes and looked around in utter shock. He had survived...or rather, was spared. It was a miracle! His gaze fell across the vehicle that had nearly struck him, seeing that it had spun about, face the completely opposite direction from where it was heading.

It was still and quiet. Too quiet. By this point the person inside would have already stepped out. Cautiously, he bounded toward the car and climbed his way up to the hood. Inside he could see the person who was driving. Through the glass she stared at him for a moment before releasing a huge sigh of relief. Immediately she spoke with a quiet but joyous tone. "I'm so sorry Mr. squirrel! I'm so happy that I could move in time and avoid hitting you."

He tilted his head, thanking her in return for sparing him, not that she could understand him at all. The squirrel moved closer, jumping on her side view mirror. She carefully rolled down the window, petting him gently before politely saying her goodbyes and setting up to get on the road again. He felt happy that he had made such a kind friend but sad that she had to go so soon.

The car sputtered to life, everything thankfully intact. It started pulling out into the empty lane carefully, and slowly she began driving away getting further and further into the distance. With each passing moment of him watching her get smaller and smaller in his view, he thought and wondered. What if she were to get into more accidents like that? More trouble? He should be there for her. Quickly, the furry creature scurried up the nearest tree, jumping from one to the next, vowing to protect her and swear loyalty and protection to the kind person who spared his life. The person he owed it to.
