Snow crunched under her feet as she left the graveyard. It was mid winter and the weather had been relentless for the past week so everything was covered in a layer of white. Even the graves. Hers was so covered you couldn't even see the name anymore but the location of it was so ingrained that it she still knew which one it was without seeing the name. After all, she went to it daily.
She just wished she could say she was sorry. That's all she wanted. Each flower left was an apology. Each time they withered she knew she hadn't been forgiven. Not yet, that is. She would never stop trying. Not until she was dead, too, and could meet with her to tell her in person. She missed her so much.
_______________________I peeked into what was to be my 3rd grade classroom. I immediately felt my heart sink as the loud chatter and screaming of other children as they ran excitedly around the room hit my ears. "Mom, I don't want to..." I whined to my mother who stood behind me. She gave me a sorrowful smile while saying, "I know, honey, but public school isn't that bad! You'll make a lot of friends," in a coaxing tone.
We had a small stare down as I stalled before I gave in and let her lead me into the room, though I stuck to her like glue. We found my desk labelled 'Luka Megurine' in bright flashy letters at the top. I was seated in the back with only two other desks touching mine, which was a bit of a relief since most of the other desks had three neighbors.
"Honey, look, it's the girl you sit next to," My mother whispered to me as she gestured to a girl with teal hair tied into small pigtails putting her stuff into a desk next to mine with the name, 'Miku Hatsune' on it. "Say hi," She then added as I stared awkwardly at the girl. Miku looked over at me as she noticed my staring and lack of introduction. "I- uh..." I started, panicked as she noticed me.
She gave a light giggle and stuck her hand out to me, asking, "Hi! I'm Miku and you're... Luka! Are you new here?", looking over to my name tag halfway through. I gave a nod before saying, "I was homeschooled," quietly, and taking her hand. She gave it a firm shake before my mother chipped in, asking, "Miku, where are your parents?" with a bit of concern as she was about the only kid in the room without a parent shadowing them.
"My mom and dad had to work," Miku responded, cueing an "Oh," from my mother. "Well, speaking of work, I have to go now, honey," She then said, giving me a peck on the cheek and a hug before leaving the room.
As I watched my mother leave with disappointment I heard Miku give a "So..." beside me, making me look over to her. "I guess you don't really have any friends if you've been homeschooled, huh?" She asked, which made me give a nervous nod. "Ok! Well my best friend is in a different classroom than me this year so I need a friend, too," She then said with a giggle.
"I... ok, thank you," I said, not really sure how to respond but I was glad someone was willing to be my friend so quickly. I then jumped as I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to see a girl with messy short light blonde hair. "Are you Luka?" She asked, which made me nod. "I'm Aria... I sit next to you..." She said quietly. I was surprised there seemed to be someone shyer than me.
"Don't even think about it Ari, Luka's already my best friend," Miku then said defensively, suddenly grabbing my arm and pulling me closer to her. "I wasn't trying to steal her, I was just trying to be nice," Aria then said in an angry tone which came out of nowhere from her shy facade. Miku huffed and sat down, which made me sit down as well as she still had a grip on me.
"She's trying to steal my other best friend, too," Miku whispered to me, looking at Aria suspiciously as she sat down next to me. "Is she mean?" I asked, looking to Aria as well thinking she didn't seem that bad. "Super," Miku responded before shaking her head. "Don't worry about her! Who's your favorite princess?" She then asked, pulling out her pencil holder with Ariel on it.
