Romance doesn't happen over night. The first step to adding romance to your story is giving signs off a "spark." There are multiple ways to do this:

1. Teasing
2. Touch
3. Conversations with third parties

1: When you tease, you usually make it about something totally unrelated to romance. For example:

I trip over my shoelace, nearly falling before quickly catching my balance. I look to to see him laughing at me.

"You're so clumsy." He laughs. With most people I would have been offended, but he made me want to smile back.

One character does something, and the other character teases them for it. That's the chance for the first character to start to recognize their feelings.

2: Like teasing, the touch should be unrelated to romance, or physical desires. It should also be totally accidental. For example:

He reached over to get his plate from the waitress and his hand brushed my arm. I froze. Already I could feel heat radiating through my body, centered the spot where he had so briefly touched me.

From there, you can have both characters "accidentally" touch the other.

3: Conversations with third parties is usually a girl talking to her friends. You can start off with the girl asking her friends about their relationship, of they could ask her. Alcohol is always helpful, but it isn't necessary. For example:

I laughed over my drink. It had been way to long since I've had a girls night, and I was so excited to be here with my friends.

"So...any good relationships lately? You know about ours already, it's your turn to spill!" My best friend laughs, and against my will, I blush.

"Oh, there is someone! Who is he? Is he hot? Does he like you back?" My friends bombard me with questions.

"Whoa, slow down! I don't even know if I like him." I protest.

"Do you think about him as you fall asleep? When others mention people they like, do you compare them to him? Whenever you talk about him, do you get shivers?"

"Well, I mean, yeah but-"

"Then you like him."

These kind of conversations really only have one purpose. Helping a character realize there feelings. If it's a fantasy novel, it doesn't have to be a girls night out. It can be anywhere when your character is alone talking with somebody unrelated to the relationship.

After one of these conversations, the character can become determined, nervous, or run away, depending on the character.
