The Greek Gods Are Real!
Hi my name is Hope Smith. I'm fourteen but my mom says I was born middle aged because I can take care of myself really well. I live in an apartment in New York City. My mom Grace works at a Greek Mythology museum. My mom, who I thought was crazy back, then believed that the Greek gods were real. Until last summer, I didn't believe her at all but I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's how it all began.
"Hooray" The whole school shouted. Summer break was finally here. I got out of the school as fast as I could and got in my mom's car. "Drive" I yelled as soon as I got into the car! "Slow down honey," my mom said! "I want to get away from this place as fast as I can," I replied! "Don't you want to remember all the good times you had in school?" she said. "What good memories" I laughed. My mom sighed and started the car.
As soon as we got home, I jumped out of the car and ran upstairs to our apartment. I jumped on the couch and flicked on the T.V. My mom came in and said "You want pasta for dinner sweetie"? "Sure" I replied. "There's nothing on T.V" I yelled! "Try the history channel I hear there talking about Greek and Roman gods tonight"! "Blah I'm not watching that mom. "Everybody knows they're not real," I said! "They are too," yelled mom! "No their not," I screamed! "Yes they are" mom answered! "Well even if they were real I wouldn't watch them," I replied. Silence was mom's answer.
After an hour I started to wonder why I didn't hear cooking pasta, and how come mom never answered me. I sat up and ran into the kitchen. What I saw there startled me. Our once neat kitchen looked like a hurricane had hit it. Pots and pans were scattered across the floor. Mom's prize cookbooks were ripped to shreds. On the table was mom's gold locket with my picture and a note my dad wrote inside. My mom had always been secretive about my dad. She wouldn't even let me read the not he had written her that was inside the locket, even if I asked her a million questions about him. She told me he had died at sea. I went over and picked up the locket and opened it. A piece of folded fell to the floor, it wasn't my dad's note it was a different one, I could tell it was new. I picked it up and read this...
Dear Sweetie,
The old Greek heroes told me to write this note so here it goes. Greek heroes on the Greek god's command have captured me. They said that you have to come and rescue me to get me back.
Love,
Mom
(P.S. Hurry up I'm getting hungry)
"Yeah right" I muttered under my breath. She's never gone this far to make me believe in the Greek gods. It's a new record I thought. "I'd better check the rooms to see where she's hiding,". I checked all the rooms in our apartment. I even went into other people's apartments. One woman with a pink poodle thought I was crazy when I told her about the note. Although I thought she shouldn't be talking, because most normal people don't have pink poodles. Finally, I had to sit down and put up my white flag. I couldn't find her anywhere. She had found a great hiding place.
"Fine" I yelled. I went to my room and slammed my door. If my mom wanted to play like that, so be it I thought.
It went on like that for three nights. On the third night I sat down on the couch and started crying. "O.K mom you win. Please just come out now," I said between my tears. Then I realized that maybe just maybe she wasn't lying maybe just maybe I really did have to save her. That night in my bed I made a decision. My mom needed me I was going.
The next morning I got a knapsack, put some clothes, camping supplies, and other necessities and left. I headed for the nearest airport. I had done some research on the gods, they were supposed to be living on a mountain called Mount Olympus in Greece. I had some Christmas and birthday money left I hoped it would be enough to get me on a plane to Greece. I would worry about where I would sleep and ate later. One thing at a time I thought. And I left.
To Be Continued...
