Siren's POV

By the time we reached Guadalupe Victoria, the sky had shifted into something darker, scattered with stars that looked almost too intentional to be random. Almost like someone had pressed them there instead of letting them fall into place naturally.

Warm lamps spilled onto cracked sidewalks, neon flickering in half-working signs, music drifting out of open doors as if it belonged in the streets more than inside the buildings. People filled random corners and sidewalks, existing inside the nightlife like it was second nature. I watched them longer than I meant to. Not because I felt out of place, but because everything felt slightly too alive to ignore.

Baja California was much different than my home in New York.

Not louder. Just warmer. More communal, yet somehow less crowded at the same time.

The streets smelled like grilled meat, cigarette smoke, old pavement still holding onto the day's heat, and something sweet I couldn't place drifting from a nearby bakery. People crowded the sidewalks laughing in rapid Spanish, families sitting outside restaurants long after dark like nobody was in a hurry to get home.

The architecture felt old in a way that carried history instead of age. Buildings painted in faded colors lined the streets beside little shops with handwritten signs and flickering lights. None of it should've matched as well as it did, but somehow it all blended together naturally.

I found myself staring longer than I meant to.

Not because it was strange.

Because it felt strangely easy to disappear into.

Tank pulled the bike to a stop at a random curb and cut the engine. Suddenly, the world became loud in a different way. No vibration. No motion. Just the city settling around us.

I swung off the bike quickly, pulling off my helmet and shaking my hair loose. My shoulders ached in that familiar way they always did after sitting too long alone with my thoughts.

Tank stayed on the bike for a second longer than me. I could feel him watching before I even turned around. Not staring. Just noticing, the way he always seemed to without making it obvious.

I started walking before I could think about it too much.

A tattoo and piercing shop sat a few storefronts down, the bright 'open' sign buzzing faintly against the building. Something about it pulled me in before I consciously made the decision to walk toward it.

"Siren." Tank's voice came from behind me, steady sounding.

I glanced back at him. "I know this is impulsive."

One side of his mouth twitched slightly. "Wasn't gonna say that."

"You were thinking it."

"Actually," he said, climbing off the bike, "I was thinking you might finally be living a little."

That stopped me for a second.

Before I could think too hard about what that meant, I pointed toward the shop.

"I'm getting a piercing."

His eyes searched mine briefly, like he was checking for something deeper beneath the words.

Then he nodded once.

"Alright."

Going inside, the air shifted immediately. The shop was warm and quiet. It smelled faintly of antiseptic, ink, and something sweet like incense, trying to cover it all up. The lighting was low enough that everything felt softer than it probably was. A woman behind the counter looked up from her phone and smiled softly.
