"Sirius?" She whispered, tapping his shoulder. She had forgotten to take her bag back to her room and when she came downstairs to the common room, she found Sirius Black sitting by the fire all alone. He wasn't doing anything, just rather staring at the dying fire.

"Oh, Y/N!" He exclaimed turning to face her.

"Are you alright?" She smiled.

"I'm fine." He said, turning back to the fire.

"What are you doing here all alone?" She asked.

"Couldn't sleep." He shrugged.

"Do you mind if I sit with you?" She asked. He merely shrugged. She sighed and sat next to him as silence filled the space between them.

"Can you talk to me?" He asked, getting annoyed of the silence now.

"Sure. What do you want me to talk about?" She asked.

"Anything." He whispered. She felt her heart sink to the pit of her stomach. She had been good friends with him since the beginning and never had she seen him so broken. She knew what had happened at the Black's house over the summer. How could she not? Her best friend, James Potter had told her about it. He was worried and couldn't keep it in. He needed advice on the matter. He wanted to know how he could help his best mate get through after he ran away from his prejudiced parents. She felt sad and pitiful and she had no idea what to do to make him feel better.

"I-uhh-" She thought for a while about what she should say that wouldn't work him up.

"Did you do your potions homework?" He asked.

"Yeah." She nodded, chuckling nervously. "I did. Took me two hours."

"Can you help me with it?" He asked.

"Like right now?" She furrowed her brows. He just nodded.

"Sure." She shrugged.

"I'll get my stuff." He said, getting up and walking away to his dorm room. The rest of the night, she sat with him and helped him finish potions homework. After potions, they did tranfiguration and at about 4 in the morning, he told her to go to bed.

"Y/N!" Someone called as she walked out of the common room that morning.

"Hi James!" She smiled as he caught up with her.

"You were with Sirius last night?" He asked. She nodded as they resumed walking to the Great Hall for breakfast.

"He was very upset." She sighed.

"Did he say anything?" James asked hopefully.

"Well, not really." She shook her head. "We--I only helped him with the potions and transfiguration homework. Did he say anything to you?"

"No! Merlin, he's been like this for days. Won't tell us anything." James groaned, running a hand through his hair.

"Maybe he just needs time to calm down or something." She suggested.

"Maybe I just need to shake him until he speaks up." James shrugged.

"James, I know you're worried but that's not the solution." She giggled, patting his arm.

The entire day, she noticed that Sirius wasn't upset but he wasn't happy either. He wasn't his charming and confident self. He looked rather detached and blank.

"Hi." Y/N heard a voice as she sat in the common room, reading a book that night. She looked up and saw Sirius trying to smile at her.

"Hi." She smiled.
