February 25th
The chilling February wind blew my short, greasy, locks of chestnut hair out of my face. I stood at a crosswalk and waited for the rush hour cars to come to a stop before I could finally walk over to the other side. New York was always extremely crowded during this time. The new year had just begun and thousands of lost souls found themselves wanting to make it big in the city of dreams. I was used to it, it wasn't anything remotely new to me.
My shoulders were burning due to the fact that I was being carried down by my ungodly looking book bag. It was filled with 1950's propaganda novels and unfinished drafts of stories that would probably never get published.
I woke up at 6:15 as usual and took a short shower, considering that my apartment building did not have hot water. I gave my myself half an hour to get dressed and watch the news before I headed out to take the subway all the way to 31st street. I worked for a local news paper that not that many people knew of, The Daily Senatorial. The pay was relatively steady, and the office only few blocks away from my brother's apartment. The job did have its perks, hot coffee and doughnuts from Bob's pastry heaven made each morning a lot easier.
My brother Jonathan lived near Penn station, in an undoubtedly overpriced modernized apartment complex. He lived there with his wife Elaine and two children, Matthew and Andrea. The reason he could afford to live in such an upperclass neighborhood was because he worked for an agency that dealt with special law enforcement and counter-terrorism. It did take up a lot of his time, but John was extremely passionate about his job.
It was Monday morning, meaning John had probably been at work for about three hours. Calling him a workaholic was a bit of an understatement. I decided to give him a call before I entered the elevator to head to my office. As soon as I held the phone up to my ear I could hear his familiar voice grunting in annoyance.
"Alex," he said monotoned.
" John! I'm really glad I got ahold of you," I exclaimed with joy. Usually whenever I disturbed his work he'd ignore my call without hesitation.
"Is anything wrong? Are you ok?" John asked, I could tell he was a little on edge.
"No, no. Everything's fine," I responded, unsure why there was such worry in his voice.
"The question is are you ok? You seem a little distraught," I asked."Yeah, it's just been a rough couple days here in the office. I'm fine though." His voice was shaky and trembling, he wasn't fine and I knew that. Work had started to really take a toll on him.
" I'm here for you if you need to talk, I'm always one call away," I said. I wanted reassure him that I'd be here no matter what.
"Thanks Alex. I've got to go, got lots to do. I'll call you later ok?"
" Ok, I love you."
Those words were the last I spoke to him.
