"Shadow! Shadow..." Sonic searched Shadow's room desperately. "Man, where could he be?" He flipped over pillows and checked under the bed. He even looked for him behind the computer. Knuckles rolled his eyes. "I doubt Shadow would be hiding behind his computer this whole time."
Sonic placed his hands on his hips and surveyed the area one last time. "Hmm. I guess he's not here." Tails suggested, "He's probably depressed after Kat's little accident. Maybe we could find him at a club? A fancy restaurant?" Knuckles added, "When I'm depressed, I go to McDonalds and change my name to Linda."
Sonic wagged his finger. "Come on, let's find that hedgehog!"
Meanwhile, Shadow stepped into a bar. He didn't even take the time to know its name. Vector sat asleep at a table, along with Espio and Charmy. Shadow walked over to them, causing Espio to look up from polishing his shuriken. "Oh, didn't see you there." Shadow pulled out the chair beside Vector. "Is this seat taken?"
Espio didn't respond. Not caring, Shadow went ahead. He rested his head in his palms, staring off into the distance. A waitress came by asking, "Would you like to order anything, sir?" Shadow turned around. "Kat, I..." He mistook the waitress for her. He immediately looked down. "Nevermind. I'll... have a shot of..." He thought. "The strongest thing you've got."
The city streets seemed to go on endlessly as Sonic turned around tight corners and searched for Shadow. "A bar! Just where I'd go."
Vector realised that Shadow wasn't going to drink the rest of his fifth glass of Deadly Whiskey. He lay with his face buried in his arms, moaning,"Maria, Kat, Mario Kart..." Vector scratched his head. "What? Mario?" He picked up Shadow's glass and looked at it. "You know, some people would look at this glass and say that it's half empty. Others might say it's half full. I imagine... you're a half empty kind of guy, right?"
Shadow whispered, "Couldn't walk away from something broken, tried to find a way to make it good again. Only you can make a difference, darling. You could have."
The doors of the bar bursted open. "There he is!" Sonic pushed through the crowd to find Shadow. He tugged on his tail. "Come on! Get up, sleepy-head."
Shadow groaned, "Why her? Why not Tails or somebody?" Sonic lifted Shadow to his feet. "Let's go, Shad! Tails has invented a machine to recharge the Chaos Emeralds. We only need two to go back in time." Shadow wept, turning away. "We can save Kat!" Sonic tried to convince him, "She would still be here, by your side."
Crying, Shadow looked back to him. "It wouldn't be the same."
"How?"
"It wasn't love, it was something deeper. But, now I know that I can't keep even a little girl alive."
"We can still bring her back."
"Don't you get it? She would know I failed, Mephiles would know I'm too afraid to move on."
Sonic turned away, crossing his arms. "Fine, then I'll go with Silver." Shadow stomped his foot. "Don't! I'll... okay. I'll go. We'll go together."
...
Tails pulled the emeralds out of the machine. He handed one to Sonic and another to Shadow. They nodded, pressing their arms against each other. They induced a Chaos Control, opening a glowing portal through time and space. Sonic jumped in. "Let's do this!"
Silver joined him. Shadow reluctantly hopped through.
The portal opened up in a dark location. Silver pushed his way out of the pile. "Move over!" Sonic squeezed his way through, pushing open a door slightly. "Where are we?" Shadow inquired. Sonic said nothing as he peered through the small crack. Mephiles walked around the room. "It's 11:10, almost time for an important call."
