"Hey, I'm Veronica."

Her words were silver and soft. They were written in cursive, softly leaving her mouth and filling the air. Her hair was a dark brown, nearly black, and hung on the shoulders like dark curtains that shielded her face. A pearly face with beautiful features. I gave her a smile. I would speak to her, but then she might see my words. Black and scratched, dropping out of my mouth like tar. Instead, my dad spoke to her. His words were an arrogant red, cursive words slithering out of his mouth like a snake.

Dad left to go to work. I tapped my fingers in a rhythm on my lap.

"It's nice to meet you, Jason."

For a moment, her words were as ugly as mine. No. My name was the ugly word. It dropped out of her mouth just like my tar like words did. I wanted to correct her. Jason was my dad. I was JD.

Jason Dean.

Just thinking of my name made me feel sick. It made my mind feel sticky, like cotton balls dipped in honey. It made my mouth taste as if I had swallowed mud. It made me feel dirty. It made my stomach twist into a gruesome knot. My heart rose to my throat, feeling pain as if set on fire.

"My name," I said in a slight whisper, "is JD."

Veronica gave a kind smile. Her brown eyes did not shy away from my dark ones. "JD. Nice too meet you." I had never seen words look so beautiful. Hers were the only words I had ever seen in silver. Usually, people's words were red or green. Martha from Group has royal blue words. My mom, she had yellow words. Then they had turned to blue. Dad's words were always ugly and red. But Veronica had silver words.

"JD, would you like to go out today?"

Such a simple question, but I was thinking too much about her words. I wondered if she could see them? How they curled in the air like silk ribbons. How they gracefully left her throat like butterflies fluttered from flowers. They seemed to dance in a ballet that only I could see, one so beautiful that I could not look away.

"JD?"

But still.

My name remained tar. It drooled out of her mouth like black slugs that escaped from their place on her tongue, leaving her mouth filthy with black slime as they fell out to form the letters J and D.

I jumped when she placed her hand on my shoulder. I had spaced out again. I looked at her and dropped my eyes. "I seem to always space out," I said.

Veronica gave a light laugh. I looked at her pearly face once more. She sat back down across from home, her hands now holding a folder on her lap. "That's alright. Do you mind if I ask what you were thinking?"

I shied away, falling away into my seat. "Your words are silver," I told her.

"Pardon?"

I hear a snicker to my right. Red is standing there, his eyes showing amusement as he looked at Veronica. "She's just going to leave like all the others. She'll come up with some excuse, saying she has family matters to attend to and then she'll never come back. Go ahead, Jason. Tell her about the words." Red watched me now. His face was empty of features. All he had was a pair of red eyes that always seemed to laugh at everyone. He was tall and always wore a leather jacket. His words were always red and looked at if they had been torn into pieces.

"JD?"

I quickly looked at Veronica. "I need to learn how to focus," I joked. She offered a smile. "The words..." Could I trust her? I just met her. Red didn't like her. "Are nothing. I was thinking about how I should write about our encounter," I lied. What she didn't know couldn't hurt her... right?

"I don't believe you," she said. She placed the folder down to her side and gave me a stern look. "From what I understand, and from what your father has explained, you don't do much of anything. You don't interact with anyone, you no longer draw as you had before, and you rarely leave the house." I looked down. I wasn't ashamed. I was appalled at myself for being so predictable and obvious. "Your father is worried, JD." My name once again gooped out of her mouth, staining her lips black. "I'm worried as well. I know we've just met, but if we really are going to work together to help you, I need you to trust me."

I looked over at her, Red laughing as he saw me slowly lose it. "Why should I trust you? All I know is your name. Once I tell you everything, you'll leave just like everyone else!"

Veronica watched me calmly. She didn't look scared or even bothered. Instead, she looked sad. She sat back and gave a small sigh. "Well... what would you like to know about me?" Her silver words shocked me. No one had ever let me into their lives like that. All they usually cared about was my life and how they would twist my mind around so that I can stop seeing Red and Blue and the words and everything else I saw.

I gave her a smile and calmed down. Red growled but disappeared. I looked at my hands and then back up at her. "Do you prefer cherry or coke slushies?"
