They talked for no more than twenty minutes before Sara was up and ready to leave. Their conversation had remained light and the meaningful questions had been left untouched. Sara was glad, unsure of two things. One, that she wouldn't blurt out the entire story to the red head. And two, that she would drive Mila away if she didn't say. Either way, she felt in the wrong and it was doing little to help her current esteem issues but as if she were a mind-reader, Mila seemed to notice and kept away from all things important. Although, it had led to rather bland small talk and Sara believed that if she was forced to talk to Mila then at least they could have a decent conversation.
Hoping the awkwardness would drive her away, despite the melancholy feeling settling in her stomach at the thought, Sara stood and said her goodbyes, leaving too quickly for Mila to comprehend.
'Wait!' Mila called out, her face panicked. Mila took a deep breath and sighed, looking a little disappointed in herself. Sara turned and despite the itch to run away, she was glad to be held behind.
She didn't understand how her emotions had suddenly become so conflicted.
'I'm sorry, it's just,' Mila looked down to her lap with anxiety plastered on her face. 'that...that wasn't what I wanted from this. We both know that that was a dull as hell conversation and I promise I'm not normally like that. I really want to get to know you, Sara. If you'll let me.' The fear of rejection appeared loud on her face but Sara ignored it, biting back a loud 'no'.
Sara was confused, now was not the time to be making decisions like this. She could just say yes and put it off until she was in a better place but at the same time, she was still a little irked at the forwardness of this girl. She wasn't sure if she was comfortable in her presence.
Truly, she did understand her feelings, she just didn't want to admit it. She was drawn in because of the fear.
Just like she had been with JJ.
She shook the feeling off and tried to remain calm. 'Give me some time to think on this, Mila. Now just isn't a good time.' Sara admitted. She was sure Mila would be around the office from time to time and they could talk then. Yes, that would be much easier.
Sara left without knowing that the girl that was once in the seat next to her was hurrying behind her down the long avenues of the New York streets. 'Sara, wait up! Let's talk about this!' Mila shouted, trying to catch the other girl's attention. Despite not being a complete rejection, it was enough of one but Mila was determined and wasn't going to give up now. No, she was a stubborn girl.
She liked Sara and wanted to be her friend and she wouldn't stop until she gained her wish, that was just the way she was. Sara continued to walk and Mila continued to follow. It seemed they were going nowhere, they walked in circles and through places that were unnecessary to go through. It was clear that this was no more than a ploy to get rid of Mila, who was blabbering on at Sara's side about how she knew she was too forward but really did want to be friends.
Sara just ignored her.
They had reached some forgotten corner of Central Park when Mila had had enough. But, that wouldn't stop her quest. No, she was just going to have to be a little more persuasive. 'Sara, stop, please, for just a second.' Mila begged, walking in front of her, taking steps backwards until she was close to bashing into a tree. She halted suddenly, avoiding making a fool of herself and falling into a tree but in turn, Sara walked right into her ended up falling into her arms. Mila smiled but had no time to wallow in her success as Sara stumbled backwards and righted herself but for the first time in the better part of an hour, she made no move to walk away.
'Okay, Sara. I know you probably think this is all a bit too much and you think I'm weird but I really want to make it up to you.'
'Following me like this isn't doing you any justice.' Sara scowled and Mila could only sigh, running a hand through her wind-whipped hair.
'I know but...' Mila stopped, why was she doing this? She was stubborn but she had followed this girl across half of New York for God's sake. Why Sara? 'Look,' she breathed, her eyes scrunching up tightly. 'How about, I take you back to my place and we can talk properly over a proper drink in a nice environment. I know this seems forward but I've seen you over the last twenty-four hours and not once have you gone home. I feel that, maybe I'm wrong, you don't want to go home. And, maybe my place might offer you somewhere to at least relax for a bit.' Mila poured sincerity in her words, hoping Sara, for once, would relax and let herself have some freedom in life. She was like a cage surrounded by chains, tangled and strong. There was no way of getting through to her. This was Mila's last attempt. She was going to break down the chains, even if it meant she had to wait to do so.
'Mila, not right now.' Sara sighed, caving into herself and running off like a frightened animal. Mila made no move to follow.
It seems the the chains were unbreakable. But, in no way did that mean Mila was giving up. If anything, her will was stronger. She looked down the forgotten path, Sara's shadow the only thing gracing the dirty path. Sighing, she sat down on a moulding bench and watched as the shadow got smaller and smaller until, finally, it disappeared from sight.
Mila looked wistfully to the ground. Even if today had been a failure, she would make sure tomorrow was not.
