A Fool’s Game
Chapter Seven
Savannah
Almost a week had passed since I had heard from Sawyer and I was starting to get slightly worried. Things around the house, well, they were just starting to get boring. During the week of living here, I had almost too much of what Camilla would usually call R & R, rest and relaxation. No one talked to me. Maids avoided me like the plague and acted as if they were scared shitless of me; well, other than Molly. I had absolutely no visitors what so ever and that only meant I had enormous amounts of time to go over the notes she left me on my bedside table. I knew everyone she knew, from the weird distant cousins that she really didn’t claim to the ‘we are only acquainted because they have loads money’ friends. I had memorized a whole booklet full of different pages of socialites, their looks, personalities, jobs, and supposed scandalous rumors about them. I guess that I was just so used to spending my time doing nothing but working that I felt slightly guilty for just sitting around. I had even secretly stayed at my own place in Brooklyn a couple of nights. It wasn’t like anyone had actually missed me. Plus, the fact that Sawyer hadn’t called just made me even more nervous. What if he never called again? What in the world would I tell Camilla?
I threw my bad up to my balcony on the second floor of the Beaumont estate and then began climbing up the trellis that beautiful white roses had grown up along the side of the house. It had been my way to get out of my room without running into anyone. It had worked pretty well so far. As I climbed to the top, I threw my leg over the railing and hoisted myself up onto the concrete. When I was firmly on the ground, I turned and looked out on the acres and acres of the greenest grass I had ever seen. The sun was barely peeking out from the clouds and the heavy rain that was pouring down this morning had halted completely. I should have gone inside and changed; only, the beautiful scenery was the almost best part of this deal. I had never in my life seen something so breathtaking…
Other than Sawyer Davenport, of course.
Damn him for not calling. As much as I knew it was probably terrible, the past week I had been itching to hear from him again, and practically sitting on the edge of my seat every time my phone rang. Honestly, I had been moping around since Wednesday morning because I had yet to hear from him. How dreadful is that? I hardly know the man!
After a few moments, I grabbed my bag and opened the double doors that led right into Camilla’s perfect room. However, when I stepped in, a man sitting on my bed with dark slicked back hair caught me completely off guard. My heart practically jumped out of my body as I looked over to him and squealed.
“Geez, Cami. Calm yourself. It’s just me, checking in on ya.” Harrison McIntire, the man I had met at the Alluvian’s charity ball, turned around slightly. He looked me up and down with those big blue eyes of his and one eye brow raised. “What in the hell are you wearing?”
My eyes glanced down to my attire and I frowned. Of course, I would be wearing the dingiest looking outfit I had in my closet at home. The pair of loose fitting blue jean shorts with my high top Nikes probably weren’t up to standards to some of these people. My cheeks began to burn, and I stood in that one spot as if someone had just caught me breaking and entering. “What? The-These old things? I wear them around the house on dreadful days like today.” And it was true, any other time I would have never been caught outside the apartment with these cloths on but I couldn’t help but forget, we weren’t exactly talking about the real me. I had no doubt that Camilla wore designer clothes every day of the week, even if she was only lounging around the house.
