 Chapter 3

James ‘cuffed’ me and stared walking me towards the camp. I could hear hardy laughter and crackling flames.  How am I going to get out of this one? I wondered. I tried to walk as slowly as possible, so I could figure out a way to run. James took my bag and crossbow, so I had to get them back before I ran. I settled on grabbing them and running when he uncuffed me. How did he know my name? I still couldn’t figure that out. I never told anyone my name. I gasped. I was beside a river. I looked down, and I wasn’t wearing my black tank and green cargo pants anymore. “Why are you crying?” I heard a boyish voice say behind me. I looked up and there stood a boy. He looked about my age, 9. He had hair so blonde it looked gold. His eyes were blue. They looked like sapphires. “Are you sad?” he asked. “Maybe.” I said, sniffling. “What’s your name?” he asked, still trying to get me to look at him. “I can’t tell you.” I told him. “Why not? I could make you happy if you did.” He said with a small smile. “Because I don’t know.”

I regained more of my memories since that day, like my name. And for some reason, I knew everything about nature and how to survive but nothing other than that. I had flashbacks of my younger years but I’ve had them under control. I could have them but still know where I was.  But, lately, I have lost myself in them.

“Hey. Hey! What’s wrong with you?” I opened my eyes. I was lying on the the ground. Ryder was right in front of me. I jumped. “How long was I out?” I asked. ”About 15 minutes.” He replied. “They’re getting longer too.” I whispered to myself. “What? Would you like to tell me what the hell is going on?” he almost yelled. I looked around. Everyone was looking at us. I knew I couldn’t show weakness. Not here. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know I needed your permission to faint!” I yelled back. There was a hushed silence around the camp. No one yelled at The Soldiers. He roughly grabbed my arm and yanked me up.  That’s gonna leave a bruise, I thought. General walked over. “Now, what happened here?” he said in a menacing tone, as he grabbed my arm from Ryder and started walking, well dragging, me somewhere.  “Where are we going?” I asked. He didn’t reply. We ended up at a tent on the other side of camp. It was a long simple beige tent. “This is where you’re keeping me?” I said, amazed. It looked so simple. It should be easy to break out of this one. I thought. I’d been caught once or twice before. And they hadn’t been able to keep me there for more than a day. “Wait till you see the inside.” He replied darkly.
