It was hard to start a conversation. Alice tried, but when your partner is anything but quiet... The talk just gets dry and the pauses just become an end to it. She did not seem to have any choice but to stay quiet in this odd peacefulness she found around him.
My mother... Alice smile bitterly thinking. Parents... Why didn't I just die together with them. It'd be so much simpler now. At least I am with them. There would not have been so much suffering. She remembered when she was a child, she would always dream about having a family. Having someone you love and someone that would love you back.
It was a luxury that she would never have.
Her head hurts and her heart as well. Too much emotion crowding in, trying to fight for a place to stay in her already damaged heart. She shivered. No, no more pain... She pushed everything away, cocooning herself with another wall. She could not afford to let her guard down when it comes to her heart.
"Are you cold?" Jeronimo's voice broke through the silence filled car. "Nope, just doing some thinking... I'm just curious though... How did my parents die?" Alice was shocked... She did not expect herself to ask that. She just had this feeling, that she have to know...
She have to know what happen, how did they die...
Jeronimo grip tightened on the wheel. The strange thing was his eyes, it seemed to have flickered. From the ocean blue eyes to red and quickly back. Alice rubbed her eyes. It was gone. Maybe it was just something she had imagine or the trick of light she thought.
"If you don't want to tell me, I'm fine with it. But you know you'll have to tell me how they die eventually..." Alice said not bothering to hide the edge in her voice. She could feel that Jeronimo was hiding something... She just don't know what he was hiding about...
The silence stretched on for an eternity. Alice was tired. The trip to Jeronimo's place seems like forever. The Sun were riding high when she left the orphanage, now it was already setting. The road ahead blurred behind her vision when she heard Jeronimo soft murmurs "Sleep Alice, sleep..."
Alice had a dream, she saw a beautiful women with hazel brown hair and jade green eyes staring right at her. Her pale face contorted in sadness. "Alice..." the woman cried gently, caressing her face with love. Beside her stood a man with jet black hair and light blue eyes looking just as beautiful as the woman. He whispered urgently to the woman with a pained expression. "Quick Angela, we don't have much time!" The woman closed her eyes painfully as scarlet tears drips down her soft pale face. "We are sorry Alice. Please forgive us for leaving you... We love you..."
The car halted all of a sudden jerking Alice awake. The dream was still vivid in her head. "Sorry," Jeronimo mumbled. "but we've reached." Alice jumped out of the car still feeling groggy from the sleep she had. The dream, it had all felt so real.
"...We love you..." who were they? The tears of the woman and the anxious look of the man draws only one conclusion to their identity. They are Alice's parents. She was shocked by that thought. If they were her parents, there must be something dangerous happening. So dangerous that they had to send her away...
Alice need to find out how her parents die and why they had left her... Its time for her guardian to answer some serious questions...
Her thoughts were disrupted when Jeronimo motioned her to move forward with him. Alice looked up ahead and saw "A castle?!" Alice jolted, fully awaken now. She rubbed her eyes profusely trying to determine whether this was real or just an after effect of a too graphic dream.
Jeronimo chuckled softly at Alice confused face "You didn't see wrongly. It is indeed a castle. Its going to be your school and your home from now onwards..." the rest of the sentence was left unheard as Alice stood there, still gaping at the school or what Jeronimo said, a home.
A Home? Alice's temples throbbed. It certainly does not look at all like a home. So much information to digest all at once. Her brain just cannot cope with this... Her parents, a castle home school whatever Jeronimo calls it.
The door creaks open abruptly and Alice jumped. Normally she would not have been scared of a mere creaking sound, but this.... This, is a freaking castle. Even though she had never stepped outside of the orphanage at all to see the world. She was not that stupid to not know that a castle was not the latest house design.
"They know we're here."Jeronimo explained mistaking her stillness as surprise. Alice put up a quick smile and told Jeronimo she was fine and glanced up at the castle door.
"What the....?" She started but failed to continue as she gasped at the crowd.
Everyone looked so beautiful, breath taking even. Alice could drop right at their knees if they want her to. Anything that they want her to do, she would consent... She felt herself moving forward towards them.
Snap out of it! Alice screamed at herself and stopped. The crowd seems to study her with curiosity and amusement. Alice was furious. Who do they thin they were? She knew she cannot afford to make them angry. There was something malice and dangerous about them. She could feel it. So Alice do what she does best. Put on a facade and stretch a smile.
They are still staring, this time with much more intensity. Alice had it, she spun her head and stared right at Jeronimo whispering harshly "What the hell is this?" Some of the people in the crowd laughed. Alice turned back, they could hear her? She was a distant away from them, not to mention that she was whispering.
"Welcome to Vamanight High darling." A woman said, stepping out from the crowd. She had the same jaded eyes like the woman Alice saw in her dream. Like her mother. She was beautiful, with her sharp face, small mouth and high nose not to mention the same oddly pale skin.
Everyone seems to have that condition around here.
The woman stood right next to Alice and waited.
Waiting for her to speak. Quick say something! "Pleasure to be here. I'm Alice." The crowd seems to move away silently after her introduction. Like they needed to hear her say something...
Creepy....Alice thought shuddering. This place, this castle, those people and the surroundings? There were only tress and trees only. Where on Earth could she be? Everything here screams Wrong and Unreal. It scares her a lot but it thrills her as well. Maybe this place is where she could find her freedom and excitement. And just maybe some answers.
Like how did her parents die.
"No need the formalities darling. Its outside school compound now. Just call me Viktoria." she said smiling sweetly. Alice nodded, not trusting her voice nor her mind to say the right words. Viktoria gave Jeronimo a look, dismissing him. Leaving Alice alone with her.
Viktoria touched her hand gently and murmured "Poor child, you must have suffered outside that human world." Human World? "Pardon me, but did you just said human world?" Alice asked, her mind rescrambling Viktoria's words.
The look on Viktoria's face told Alice she have made a mistake because Viktoria just stared at her, with a funny look. Shaking her head, Viktoria smiled, again "Why would I say that darling? I was just telling you that inside school compound, you should always call me Mrs Thorn. Or else the other students might think I am giving you special favour because you're my sister's child."
What?!
