"Oh, you are so lucky," One of your female colleagues let out a dreamy sigh. She was openly gaping at the man you'd slept with just several nights ago, devouring him with her blue eyes as she played with her hair in a coquettish fashion.

"Gabriel Reyes is the very definition of tall, dark, and handsome. Did you know he's in his forties? Doesn't he look ten years younger?"

Starkly aware of Gabriel's physical qualities, you managed to drone out his avid admirer as she continued her string of praises.

The Blackwatch Commander hadn't budged from his spot near the entrance of the laboratory since he'd settled in and made himself comfortable in your laboratory. While none of the other scientists in the room minded his presence, it affected you profoundly. And in a not so positive way.

You didn't like being watched—much less by someone you were never expecting to see again after a one-night stand. Even if he was just doing his job.

You turned your face away from her so that she wouldn't see you rolling your eyes.

Sure, he was good-looking. But he had an insufferable attitude—treating you like you were something fragile and prone to breakage. Protection... hah! The only protection you needed was protection from him!

It was a wonder Jack could get along with someone so overbearing and conceited. You worked to maintain a neutral voice, "You really think highly of him, don't you?"

"All I'm saying is that he can guard my body any day." Your co-worker still held that ridiculous, love-stricken look on her face. She, then, straightened up and shifted her gaze onto you. "Speaking of which, why is he personally guarding you anyway? A person of his stature would usually send someone else in his stead, right? Isn't he kind of overqualified to be a bodyguard?"

Good questions. You contemplated them quietly—you'd wondered the same.

He probably got in trouble and got demoted or something. Your quiet speculation was plausible—in the short amount of time you'd known him, he'd already proved to be unbelievably ruthless and without consequence.

"Oh! You're real close with Commander Morrison, right? Any chance you two are romantically involved?"

Letting out an uncomfortable laugh, you shook your head a little too vehemently. "God, no! He and I are just good friends. Nothing more, nothing less."

With headphones in his ears, Gabriel gave off the illusion of paying little to no attention. But his eyes roamed across the room and fixed their gaze directly on you the very moment you laughed.

Oblivious to his probing ears and lingering gaze, you set your attention on the stack of scientific papers and various research articles before you.

"So tell me a little bit more about yourself, [Y/N]—you must be pretty hot stuff to need a personal bodyguard," Your female colleague prodded, leaning against the lab-bench.

I'm never getting my work done. You refrained from sighing.

Truthfully, you weren't quite sure of the reason behind Gabriel's relentless supervision. "Well... I feel he's more like a chaperone than anything else." You forced yourself to not look at the man in question.
