Reina was restless. For days, she felt eyes on her. Especially in the dark when the fog rose high up in the sky, clouding the moon. Then she felt almost like a prey.

Not that she was scared. She didn't fear anything. She'd lived through her fears and battled them until she was nothing but fearless. And almost the strongest. Her brother was the Alpha of the Death Pack, so her birthright made her a frightening presence to many.

Reina could feel it in her veins tonight, the smell of war. The Soul Pack was closing in on them, and although her pack could slay them, something in her guts told her to stop it. She was pacing around, trying to think of a way to disguise herself into the battle. Whatever she felt, she knew she would find it in the Soul Pack. She was bothered that she didn't know their intentions besides them wanting souls to devour.

There was something more. She could feel it. She felt those eyes, and whoever they belonged to in the darkness, they were soulless. And as crazy as she was, she wanted to see who was watching her. What soulless monster had dared to taunt her.

So she made up her mind. She would sneak her way into the battle and the Alpha wouldn't be able to do anything about it then. And it wasn't like she couldn't fight. She was the third strongest female in the pack. First was the Luna, then the strongest female warrior named Jaeden, and then it was her. Reina was sure as hell more competent than many of the male warriors.

She shifted into her jet black wolf. She liked her fur since it made her blend into the night. She used her fur to her advantage.

She leaped into the night and shot through the trees until she finally reached the Death Pack's borders. Outside the territory, fighting already ensued. Enemies were surrounding the pack from all sides. Wolves howled and claws tore at flesh. She could smell death. That was what her back was good at, killing. Although the Soul Pack had an advantage, which was their ability to devour souls, the Death Pack had dark magic to protect them against having their souls devoured. All of the wolves of the Soul Pack were soul eaters. Once their mouths latched onto living flesh, they could suck out one's soul in a matter of seconds.

The Death Alpha and Luna were on the opposite side of the pack, toward the main entrance. Reina was at the back of the pack, hundreds of miles away from them. That should have been terrifying, that she really was on her own without her Alpha's protection, but tonight she felt reckless. So she jumped out of the walls that sheltered her in, and she was in the battle.

There weren't many wolves back here. It was just dark. Very dark. The Beta was in charge of this side of the territory, and it already smelled like many of their enemies had been killed.

And just when the silence grew unsettling, from the corner of her eye, she spotted a movement. It was sharp, aiming right for one of the warriors. No...he was aiming for the Beta.

Jasper, watch out! she shouted, tackling him out of the way. He'd been so busy defending the injured wolves that he couldn't even defend himself.

Reina, what the hell are you doing here? Jasper's voice growled. Get back inside the borders now! If the Alpha finds out you're out here, he'll kill both of us!

But she had gone rigid. She felt it again, that soulless gaze. This time, those eyes weren't in the darkness. They were very near, watching, prowling. Wanting.

Reina turned around to where everyone was looking. She realized all fighting had ceased when she jumped in and saved Jasper. All eyes were now on the figure behind her. He was no doubt an Alpha. The Alpha.

Oh great, she thought to herself as she shifted back. Somehow her plans were foiled and she was probably in the worst possible case scenario ever. Her eyes focused in on him but she only saw a large shadow. But there it was again, the stare.
