After hearing that I was a lost cause, I began to believe it.
No longer did I volunteer to walk across the balance beam. Instead, I stood there and watched, falling further and further behind. The other children's legs became strong, while I sat off to the side and watched. Soon, the other children moved on to more difficult things, and I was left at the balance beam.
