"Vanessa."

Hearing her name, Vanessa looked up at the guidance counselor, Ms. Monroe. She never liked talking to her counselor. Even though this one was new, she didn't trust them. She didn't want to tell her anything. The counselor chatted with the other students. One day, it could slip. When Amelia was diagnosed, her mothers and her went to a therapy session. It was to at least get their feelings out. Vanessa didn't. When they left, the therapist told her, "If you don't want to talk, that's okay. I remind writing in a journal to let your feelings out."

That was what Vanessa did. Not that she was some preppy, popular girl who wrote in her diary just to gush about her crush, it was a calming mechanism. She thought of it as writing a letter to herself, telling how she was feeling.

"You're sure of your schedule?"

Vanessa nodded, "Yes."

"You have been taking Spanish since elementry school, you sure that you want to do more of it?"

It was the only part of her real parents she had. She was adopted by Jordan and Natasha right when she was born but she knew of her ethnicity. Vanessa knew of being half Colombian. She wanted to stay true to herself.

She said, "Me gusta la clase de español."

Ms. Monroe leaned forward on her desk, "I've heard you had a rough time last year and I know that dealing with something you are dealing with is hard. You never been to my office before?"

"I'm fine."

That was a lie. She was terrified. Amelia and her were close. It didn't matter if they weren't blood sisters. It didn't matter that Amelia was pale and Vanessa wasn't. It didn't matter about where each of them came from. It mattered how they felt about each other. They felt like they were sisters and to see her sister become weaker and weaker each day at a young age broke Vanessa. Amelia should be enjoying life not stuck in a bed.

"You sure?"

"I am," Vanessa breathed, "I have good friends."

Ms. Monroe smiled, "It's always good to have friends. So what college are you planning to go?"

"I don't know," Vanessa replied, "I want to see how the year goes."

Ms. Monroe sighed, "Do you know what you want to do?"

"I like writing."

Ms. Monroe looked at Vanessa's schedule, "Then why is there no creative writing on here?"

Vanessa shrugged as Ms. Monroe wrote creative writing in her schedule, "Now, there is. I think our meeting is over."

Vanessa stood up while she took her messenger of the chair. She walked over to the door.

"Vanessa!"

She turned to see Ms. Monroe, still in her chair but leaning forward on her desk, "If you need to talk about anything. If you see anything, you can come talk to me. Our conversations never leave this room."

If she sees anything? What did she mean by that? Seeing her little sister dying? Seeing all the hate towards her mothers for being in love? Seeing all her friends leaving her for college? Seeing everyone have someone to care for but no one she could vent to without sobbing?

"Got it," Vanessa put her thumb up as she exited out the room.

She didn't close the door behind her. It allowed the person next to her in line to go to. She sighed. That's why she took her writing over a person. They didn't talk about. Her friends would be worried for her. Her mothers too but they should be worrying about Amelia's health.
