Lance sat down on his bed and brought the shirt up to his nose. He smelled the scent of fresh laundry and let out a sigh. The clothing he was wearing were too big for his body and it draped around his slim frame. Of course, they were too big, it was Shiro's shirt after all. The faded colour and the size reminded him of home and he couldn't help but smile.
Being the youngest sibling meant that he got all the old clothing. He remembered being so happy when he finally got to buy his own clothing. But now he would do anything to get the old hand-me-downs of his older brothers back.
He sighed again. The shirt did not smell as his brother's clothes but the way he swam in the shirt felt the same and for now, that was good enough for Lance. He felt warm streaks down his cheeks. He was crying. He tried to wipe away the tears but they only came faster. Somewhere he must have cried himself to sleep because he couldn't remember actually closing his eyes.
Shiro sighed. This was like maybe the fifth or sixth time this happened. He looked at the shirts laying in his closet. He could have sworn his favourite black one had laid there an hour ago. He must have made a mistake and he shook his head. He grabbed a gray shirt and pulled it over his head, it was a bit tight but not uncomfortable. He glanced at himself in the mirror before quickly walking out of the door of the room, he should check up on the others.
He was about to walk past Lance's room but he stopped. The boy hadn't really shown his face today. Now that he thought about it, he hadn't even seen Lance with breakfast. The boy was quiet, worryingly quiet.
He tapped the boy's door "Lance? Are you there?" he asked, no answer. Hunk who was walking past looked confused at Shiro "what's the matter?" he asked. Shiro shrugged and looked at Lance's door again, should he barge in? Something is obviously wrong. "Don't you think he's been awfully quiet today?" Shiro asked Hunk, which made the other guy think for a bit before nodding. Shiro sighed, he didn't like invading someones' privacy but something was definitely wrong.
The door slid open and all Shiro could focus on was the trembling boy on the bed. "Lance!" the man shrieked rushing over to the boy in a shirt way too big for his body. When Lance noticed Shiro he broke down, even more, letting out heavy sobs. "Lance, it's going to be alright," shushed Hunk who had come rushing in after Shiro. He pulled the blue paladin into a hug and let him sob into his shoulder. Shiro couldn't do much else but stare and pat the back of the crying boy in front of him.
Shiro pulled away from the two other guys. Somewhere he had been pulled into a hug too. They had stayed like that for a while and Lance seemed to have calmed down only letting out a few sniffles. "Lance, can I ask you a question?" Shiro began. Lance looked up at Shiro with tears staining his face, and red, puffy eyes. Shiro quickly glanced down at Lance's shirt, or rather, his shirt. The boy, however, seemed to have noticed his glances as his bottom lip began to tremble and tears started to well up again. "S-Shiro....I'm s-sorry" Lance wrapped his arms around Shiro and buried his crying face into Shiro's' chest. Shiro felt a hint of guilt at seeing the boy cry again. "T-the clothing reminded me of my b-brothers and, and..." Lance continued to cry as tears rolled down his cheeks and his body had begun to tremble again. "I just miss them so much..." Lance finished, completely sobbing again. Shiro wrapped his arms protectively around Lance and held him like that for a solid minute before letting go. Shiro smiled at Lance and put his hand on the shoulder of the shaking boy "Everything is going to be fine Lance, we're here for you now" Lance slowly nodded as Shiro continued "Now let's freshen up before heading to dinner." Lance nodded and the three of them walked out of the room heading towards the bathrooms.
"Oh, and Lance," Shiro spoke up causing the other boy to stop in his tracks and turn around. "You can keep the shirt" he added. He saw Lance beaming before heading into the bathroom.
Later that night all the paladins had gathered on the couch, Allura and Coran had also joined in for the cuddle session. Lance was snuggled into the blankets but he snuggled deeper into them. He was still wearing Shiro's faded black shirt, but it didn't matter as much anymore. He had found a new family, one he would treasure for all eternity.
