The desert is a brutal place when its the middle of July. My cheeks were getting red from the hot burning sun and Farah's gray hair was darkening from sweat. As we were getting closer to the canyon, I was forced to find safe trails that Farrah could get through and avoid the sheer drop offs. This process almost doubled the time it would take to travel all ten miles, but it had to be done.
My throat was dry, but I knew that I would only be without water for a couple hours since we were crossing the smallest part of the desert. An hour had past in the miserable heat, I could see the heat waves traveling across the land. Trails of dust followed Farrah as she trotted across the sand. At last the other side came into sight and I urged Farrah into a gallop.
I was relieved when we finally entered the cool shade that the dead, scattered trees provided. There was a weathered elven pathway that meandered through the trees. This would take us to Ekbir.
We cautiously trotted on the pathway and after a while more green was visible and the trees were no longer dead, but alive and thriving. I spotted a pond where I could replenish my water. The cold liquid soothed my throat when I swallowed. And then all of sudden the pathway ended and there was no where else to go.
My ears flattened against my head in confusion. "What on earth.." I muttered, just as I heard the creaking of bow strings stretching preparing to shoot. Elves surrounded us, but I held my ground and patted my horse's neck to calm her. An elf stepped forward to talk to me but I interrupted him.
"Im not here to harm anyone. My name is Flynn, and I come from Trelan. Our leader, Evangeline, sent me to seek your help," I said with confidence as I stared into the elf's emerald green eyes.
He seemed surprised to see me stand up to him, and to be honest, he did look intimidating and I was surprised too.
"Do you have a last name? And what business does your leader have with us?" he said, almost in a challenging way. The elves in Trelan were nothing like this.
"Rave," I said. "Flynn Rave is my name. And as for business, all I can say to you is that war is coming, and I need to speak with lord Elrok."
With the slightest wave of his hand all the other elves lowered their bows and some went back into hiding. "Well come then. No time to waste," he said with a smirk.
