Song - Missing Her/Interlude By: Iamnobodi
That familiar white humming bird hovered above her until she finally walked away. I know she probably wondered if I noticed it again, but she didn't look back to check. I guess she decided to leave it alone, but I did see it. I noticed it right away, and I get the feeling that I saw what she was seeing right before she left the counter – the glitch. I thought I was the only one who could see this stuff, but then the bird came back, and it was like it was trying to tell me something. The first time I saw it was last Wednesday and no matter where I seem to go, this bird somehow always finds me. This time feels different, though. This time it doesn't fly away like it usually does. It remains hovering in the air in the same spot, staring at me.
A customer breaks my gaze from the bird by waving a hand in my face.
"You okay, bro?" a man asks. I didn't even notice that he was standing there.
"Uh, yeah..." I glance back at the bird. I glance at the customer. The bird. Customer. Bird. Customer.
Crap.
"Hold on just a second, sir."
I do the one thing you're never supposed to do when manning the cash register – I walk away from it. That's a no-no, especially for me considering the fact that I'm the assistant manager, but I have no choice. At least, that's what I'm telling myself. I feel unnaturally drawn to this bird and, call me crazy, I want to see if I can find out why. I walk over to my coworker, Ashley.
"Hey, Ashley—"
"No."
I won't lie, that caught me off guard. She then laughed at me.
"Kidding. What do you want?"
I smirk and say, "See that customer there?"
"Yeah."
"He needs your help."
"My help? Weren't you just helping him?"
"Yeah."
"...Okay?"
I grab her arm and pull her towards me a few steps. "You see that bird hovering over there in the corner near the entrance?"
She strains to see what I'm talking about. "No."
"No? Are you blind? There's a white hummingbird hovering in the air clear as day."
She looks again. "Okay, Ellis? If there's something you need to tell me, you know I won't judge you." She put a hand on my shoulder. "I'm your friend. But right now, that guy is looking at us like we're two big ol' targets so go be a big boy and help him out."
"But Ash—"
"Ah-dah-dah!" She starts to push me away when I look back over to find the bird but as soon as I do, it moves around frantically and then finally disappears by flying in the same direction that the girl left in. I don't know what to think of it so I just stand still until maybe the bird shows up again. In a flash, the bird zips back into the corner, then disappears – it wants me to follow it.
