The tiles on my roof were cold and wet against my back after the rain. The moon shone down so brightly it threatened to encase me in its light. I knew there was going to be a meteor shower tonight, that is why I wanted to come up here to watch it. Especially after the fight with my parents.
I checked my watch. It read 1:46 am, 12/08/17.
Any minute now.
I felt something sharp bounce in to my left arm and let out an involuntary yelp. Were these meteors? Or was I being attacked by an invisible intergalactic species come to invade the earth? I felt another and sat up, looking down at my front yard.
There, of course, was Sam.
I smiled, unable to help it. My worries and stress about my parents from a few minutes ago had vanished and left me dazed and happy and carefree and ohmygodIamsohappytoseeher.
"Why did you throw those stones at me?" I asked, feigning anger.
"Stones, Naomi? They were pebbles at most!" She shouted back. I laughed. She laughed louder. I shushed her.
"My parents will hear!" I said, smiling but inwardly worrying.
"Then let me in, ya dummy!" She stage-whispered. I giggled and climbed down the ladder, embracing her in a hug that I hoped explained everything.
She was the exact person that I needed to talk to right at this moment. We broke apart and stared at each other, my hands resting against her hips and hers around my neck.
"I love you." She whispered, smiling and looking at me like I was the world.
My heart and stomach did backflips and I bit my lip, pulling her closer to me.
God, I loved her too.
"C'mon, let's head up or we'll miss the shower." I squeezed her hand and stepped aside to let her go in front of me up the ladder.
We lay down curled up next to each other. Everything in the world just felt completely at peace at that precise moment. Her creamy thick blonde hair stretched in to infinity. Her eyes - her eyes - were the deepest shade of brown and shone as brightly as each star above me. She was so beautiful and she was mine. She is mine. How did I possibly end up so lucky?
"You are so beautiful." I muttered, half hoping she wouldn't hear me. She looked up in to the sky, the never-ending sky.
"Look!" She whispered excitedly after a few moments. I unravelled myself and also gazed up above. "Do you see that silver trail?" Her voice was tickling my ear it was so close. "That's the meteor burning up at the atmosphere." I giggled.
"Cool..." I said. Her horror-stricken face whipped around to me.
"Did I just notice a hint of sarcasm? It is cool..." I laughed and took her hand again, bringing it up to my lips. I saw here face relax.
"It is amazing, sweetie." I said, kissing her hand. She smiled.
We stayed for a few minutes like this and then went back to looking at all the meteors cascading down through space in front of our eyes.
"Did you..." she whispered, then cleared her throat, "Did you fight with your parents again?" I felt a bump rise in my throat but swallowed it down, not wanting to cry in front of her. "It..it was about me again wasn't it..." her voice trailed off.
"It is not your fault and you know that." I said forcefully as I turned to her.
She opened her mouth and closed it. "But I don't want us being together to... you know... get in the way of your relationship with your parents." She gulped. "They love you, you know." Her voice was getting quieter and quieter and she turned her head slightly away from me.
