Cocktail of Love...and Blood
We sat in the car for several minutes, just watching the clouds roll by. I watched quite a few students walk by Seth's car, looking through the windows, trying to figure out who I was.
My name was the same; we'd not thought to change it. So people would just assume weird coincidence on the names.
Seth finally turned the car off. "You know, to the humans, you look a lot like yourself. It will freak them out." He laughed loudly at himself.
I pulled the hood onto my head again making sure my face was covered. I brushed my hair out with my fingers to the side. I grabbed my notebook and pen as I stepped out of the car.
I watched as every student in the parking lot turned to stare at me. I pulled the hood down tighter, fearing I'd shown skin. I watched Seth step out, his hood perfectly over his head. He threw his backpack over his shoulder and intertwined our fingers. We walked through the crowd of gawking students into the main building.
We removed our hoods in awkwardly perfect unison. I actually heard people gasp at me. I felt the adrenaline rushing through my veins. It was like a spotlight was on me and I wanted to fade away. I glanced around the cafeteria at several posters I had painted in my human years, each having a small note about missing me.
Seth tugged lightly at my hand and guided me to the cafeteria as if nothing was new. We even sat at our old table, alone and outcast from the other students. I sat beside him at our small round table, slowly pulling my jacket off.
Seth pulled my chair right next to him and threw his arm around my shoulders. I kissed his cheek lightly and then laid my head on his shoulder as a tall football player I'd known walked up to the table.
"Hey, man..." Tyler DeBere said softly to Seth.
"How ya doing, Tyler?"
"I was just coming by to say, I'm sorry for your loss. I really liked your girl; she was a great friend. But I see you've already..." he trailed off, finally taking in my appearance.
His mouth dropped. He had no doubt noticed the likeness. "What is your name?"
"Claire," I answered.
His eyes widened at my name. He took a small step backwards, his eyes never leaving me. He turned around and walked off quickly, throwing glances over his shoulder repeatedly.
I giggled loudly beside Seth. He too joined in the laughter as the bell rang for class.
He escorted me to the administrative office, kissed my cheek, and then said goodbye.
I danced over to the front desk. "Hi, I'm the new girl."
The little lady glanced up from her computer. "Name, honey?" she asked rudely.
"Claire Jones."
The lady coughed loudly and looked up at me. "Excuse me?!"
"I said my name is Claire Jones."
She stared at me; I'm sure noticing the likeness, too. "Oh..." She began clicking on her keys again. "Here you are..."
I smiled at her as she handed me a schedule. I froze when I read the paper; I had the exact same classes. I glided out of the office, half laughing at the stupid trick.
I walked into my normal first period class. I actually heard someone's pen drop to the floor. I danced over to Mr. Greene, smiling as I handed him my schedule.
He sent me to the only empty chair, my old one. I twirled once as I walked to it. I sat down lightly and winked at one of the boys who wouldn't turn around.
