Kai's P.O.V.
I couldn't sleep the night before the first day of school. I was really sore and my parents were up all night fighting. I could hear things flying around the house. And poor little Amber was stuck down there. She was only 3 and she may as well be dead. I wanted to go get her, but I knew that if my parents saw me out of bed they would have beaten both me and Amber. So I stayed put. I heard her crying a couple times, then one of my parents would scream at her. I was so mad at myself that I had forgotten to grab her on my way up to my room the night before. I hated going to school. Not because I hated learning, but because I had to leave Amber alone with my parents. I liked learning, it was time for me escape. But not Amber.
That morning I didn't let go of Amber. I couldn't stand her being scared. Luckily my parents had left, so I would not have to deal with them. But now there was no one to watch Amber while I was at school. I looked at her. She was so pretty. She had long blonde hair, and the most curious bright blue eyes. She was the most kind little girl I had ever known. I didn't know how she was part of this family. And I felt awful about the way she looked. She had dirt on her face and she was kind of scrawny. Her clothes are small and torn up. My parents never payed the water bill and spent their money from their jobs on alcohol and drugs. There was never enough money for us to get new clothes, so I didn't look so good either. I didn't have any money, and I cant get a job. And I refuse to steal. I mean what would that teach her. I gave her some of the last bits of food and water and put her in her crib up in my room. I kissed her on the forehead and left the house. I walked to school. Its was cold out. And I didn't have a jacket, or even a long sleeved shirt that didn't have holes in it. I kept looking back to the house, I hated leaving her there. But I didn't have any other choice.
I got to school right before the first bell. I rushed to my locker and got my stuff. I had a hard time finding my first class. But on my way there I saw a room. It was filled with kids, I guess it was a daycare. I then realized that I didn't have to leave Amber at home anymore. I could take her to school with me. I wanted to find out more about it first. Cause it kind of seemed to good to be true. So at the end of the day I went in and stepped up to the front counter. The girl looked friendly. She had raven black hair and dark tanned skin. Her eyes seemed to be black like her hair but they were probably just dark brown. "What can I help you with?" She said with an intrigued voice. I looked around "Is this a daycare for...everyone?" She looked at me funny. "You're a freshman, how do you already have a kid?" I shook my head and blushed. "Shes my sister and my parents work all day. I just wanted to know if I could bring her here during the day then pick her up when school let out." A look of realization came over her face. She stuck her hand under the desk and came up with a packet of paper. "Just fill this stuff out, and bring her tomorrow." I took the paper and started to walk away, but stopped and turned around. "I didn't get your name." She smiled at me sweetly "Mirabelle, but just call me Mia. Mirabelle sounds too hippy." I laughed and walked out.
I walked home with a smile on my face, I was so happy that I wouldn't have to leave Amber at home anymore. When I got home I went into my room and saw Amber sleeping, she looked so peaceful. And thank god that my parents weren't home yet.I sat on my bed and looked through the paper work. It was mostly just medical records and such. I filled most of it out. Then I got to the last page. It required a parent signature, I sighed and shook my head. I hated forming their signatures, it made it look like they cared about us. But this was for Amber. So I pulled out a pen and scribbled down their names. Amber woke up, she looked around and saw me. She popped up and smiled. "Kai! Kai! Kai!" She screamed. She doesn't talk much, but my name is her favorite word. I walked over and picked her up. "Whats up princess?" She just hugged me. I went and sat down on my bed. "Guess what?" She giggled "What?" I pulled out the paper work "I got you a daycare at my school. So now you don't have to stay home alone. And I can come see you through out the day. Then after school I can come and get you." She jumped on my bed and laughed and smiled and screamed. I could tell she was happy. After a minute she stopped and plopped down on my bed. She hugged me again. "Thank you Kai. I love you." She whispered in my ear. I hugged her back "I love you too. And you don't need to thank me, I'm happy that I can do this."
My parents didn't come home that night. It worried me, but it made both me and Amber feel safer. The heat went off that night. So Amber slept in my bed with me and my thin sheets. I would have to figure out some way to pay bills, I mean it wasn't even winter yet and we were almost freezing to death in the middle of the night. The next morning I tried to clean up Amber a little. I tried to find some nicer clothes, but that was almost impossible. I did find some pairs of my old clothes, and they fit her. They didn't look bad but they didn't look very girly. And neither of us really liked them. But we had to make due. We walked to school together, I ended up carrying her half way there. I didn't blame her, it was a long walk. When we got to school I walked Amber to the daycare. There was Mira sitting at the front desk. She smiled when she saw me. I handed her the paper work. She took it and looked through it. She nodded her head. "Looks good. Oh and I never got your name." Amber jumped up so she could see above the counter for a second and said "Kai!" Mira grinned and stuck her hand out "Well its nice to meet you Kai." I shook her hand. She leaned over the counter to look at Amber "And you must be Amber" Amber hid behind my leg. "Yup" I said rubbing her head. Mira got up and opened the door. "Well when ever you're ready you can come on in." Amber smiled, hugged me and whispered in my ear "Promise you'll get me?" I shook my head "Of course"She ran into the room and Mira closed the door. I headed for the door "See you later Kai" she said waving. I waved back and headed for my locker.
