Beep! Beep!

I wake up to the beeping of my alarm and like every kid who goes to school, it is the sound of torture because it means that it is the start of the school day. Or in my case, the start of my junior year of high school. I roll myself out of my white comforter and walk into the bathroom.

After brushing my teeth and taking a shower, I take a look at myself in my mirror, realizing that I need makeup. I apply powder, foundation, and eyeshadow, going for a bold look. I also apply some false lashes onto my current, short ones. I swipe on some mascara, matte lipstick from Kylie Jenner's cosmetics line, and highlight.

I next move into my messy closet. I really should've cleaned over the summer. Oh well. I pick out a super cute pair of  high waisted shorts and leave the white pockets out. I also pick out a long sleeved, black crisscross top. I look into my floor length mirror, taking in my new body and feeling proud that I lost a lot of weight this summer. I loosely curl my new ombré hair and run my fingers through it, making beach waves instead. I grab my Adidas superstar shoes and head out the door and downstairs for breakfast.

I walk into the kitchen kissing my mom atop her forehead. "Good Mornin' ma!"

"Good morning sweetie pie! Breakfast is: pancakes!" My mom was definitely the best single mom in the entire world. When I was little, my dad died because he was a firefighter and went to go save a women inside the house. He saved her but the flames engulfed him. I am sad for a moment as I think about the memory but quickly remember that pancakes are calling my name!

"Are you nervous for the first day?" my mom asked. She would never ask such a thing but I know exactly why she was asking. It had been over a year since the incident happened and I didn't want to even think about the unthinkable.

"Nah, I'm fine mom," my mom gives me a sideways glance. I throw my hands up in defeat, "Honest!"

"Ok then," she says not really believing me. I walk out the door and breathe in the crisp, cool weather that is unlikely in sunny California. I hope this year was gonna be better than last year. I take a deep breath and start walking towards my torture...school.
*************************************
I briskly walk to my new locker on the east wing. My best and only friend is waiting for me and runs up to give me a gigantic hug. "Jen, you can stop anytime now," I squeak out as she continues to hug me super tight.
"Sorry! I'm just so excited to see you I mean I was at camp being a counselor for snotty kids," she yells through the hallways. People start to look at me and immediately whisper.
She's lost weight
She changed her hair
Nothing that she changed physically can change what she did last year
Why is she even here
I brush off what they say and immediately start running towards my locker. I stuff my books inside and take out my current books for the first 3 periods. Jen closes my locker for me and we briskly walk down the hall, my eyes on the floor, hoping no one will torment me. I manage to make it out of the east wing before he calls out to me. I pretend to not listen and rush into the south wing, as my first period class was there. "Brooke, earth to Brooklyn! Our class is here!" Jen exclaims as she waves a hand in front of my face. "Sorry, I was just distracted," I say distractedly. I was twisting my neck in all directions hoping to not run into him or any of his croonies. "Chill, he's not here," she reassures me.
I walk into my home room classroom as I inhale a familiar scent of chalkboard and I look around the classroom hoping to not see a familiar face when my blue eyes lock on a pair of soft, dark brown ones. It seemed familiar but I couldn't quite place my finger on it. We continue to stare at one another until Jen gestures for me to sit next to her. I quickly take my seat, next to her left and wait for thee teacher to begin taking roll call.
The rest of the day was a blur and I was trying to not bring attention to myself and only answered questions when the teacher called on me.
***********************************
Soon lunch rolled around and I looked around the lunch room trying to find a place to sit. It was like what I learned in biology, competition.
Each seat was like competing and if you didn't get a seat on the first day of school, you might as well eat in the bathroom stalls for the rest of the year.

Luckily, I had managed to get seats all the way in the back; no one wanted to sit with us and Jen couldn't sit with her other friends because of me. No one wanted to sit with me. I asked Jen a bunch of times to go sit with her other friends but she continued to reassure me saying in her perky voice, "I'd rather sit here with my bff ever!"

I walked into the lunch line and saw the same brown eyes from earlier but now that I take a closer look, they were lighter, like hazely brown. I swore I knew where they were from I just couldn't place it.

I unconnected my eyes from the stranger's and stand in line. Many people move away from me and go into another line. I get a very slippery sloppy joe in mystery meat sauce on a styrofoam tray. I run out of the lunch line after paying and the one person I bump into is there right in front of me. "Why hello Brooke!" I try to run past him but obviously being the clumsy person I was, I ended up slipping on a banana peel on the floor. I start to here a roar of laughs coming from the lunch room.

I tripped, I think and as my disgusting sloppy joe from the cafeteria went flying into the air, my body, which was close to hitting the ground, landed in strong arms. His chocolate brown eyes locked with my blue ones.....I think I'm falling...
