Before getting into the story... I would like to say, I am sorry for any typos or errors.
This is my first time writing short story. If you like this story then plz do comment. Also, tell me if you want more stories like this. I'll also be writing novel stories in future. I hope you enjoy reading this. Thank you for your time. Lets get to the story now.

I heard the sound of the water splashing on the windows of my school building, insects chirping as I watched it rain heavily outside. The smell of the soil reached my nose filling me with a nonchalant attitude.

It was a usual day with usual routine of rain and cloudy sky with absolutely no sign of sun. This town has always been like this. A feeling of eeriness never escapes my heart whenever I think of this gloomy little town. But, I still felt excited today. It's not every day that you get to hang out with your friends.

"We need to leave, Mavis" a blond haired girl with an expressionless face interrupted by thoughts. She has just woken up due to the ringing of her phone.

It's the start of a new school year and I was so relieved to hear that a bunch of new students joined my class. Mary was one of them. Even though she is pretty she couldn't make any friends. Those emotionless face and dull eyes of hers might be the reason for that.

I know how she must have felt. I was in the same position for 2 years. The feeling of loneliness and ignorance, I know it all too well. I was invisible to the other students like I didn't exist and it wasn't long when the teachers follow suit and shunned me from their lives. I don't know the reason why, I never had and I probably never will.

"Sure. Let's go." I replied cheerfully. Whatever hardships I endured has finally rewarded me and now I have friends and I am going to cherish them forever.

We left the school and headed towards our meeting place. After half an hour we find ourselves standing in front of an old villa whose legends are still being gossiped around this town. We are supposed to meet other two friends of ours. It's already dark now and I have this edgy feeling circling inside my guts. I did a quick scan of the villa. The building seemed old and rusty with paints worn out. The front gate was coated with rust displaying a reddish brown texture. It looked like the building will break apart if we mess it up too much. There was no way that I am going inside this scary enormous house.

"They asked us to come inside. They are waiting for us there." Mary said with the accustomed poker face of hers, chatting in a robotic tone. I know she is a really nice person, but sometimes I can't help but feel a tinge of lifelessness inside of her.

"No way." I shrieked. "I am not going inside of that thing. They both know how much of a scaredy-cat I am. Still they want me to enter this legendary haunted villa."

"I am going inside. If you wanna meet them you should as well." She said with a stern look. She started heading towards the huge front gate, then she stopped and called over her shoulder "Don't worry Mavis. As long as I am here no ghost can even come near you."  As soon as she said this she started walking again. I don't know what it was, her determined voice or a friend's caring nature, which I haven't felt for a long time, I immediately felt relieved and heaved a sigh.

I started walking and stood as close to her as I could. My fear was noticeable. My legs couldn't stop shaking and my hands couldn't stop sweating. Just a gust of wind was enough to make me jump up with terror.

We entered the villa and were welcomed by a dead body lying right in front of us with blood spilled all over the floor. I screamed in fright up to the point that my voice became soar.

"Call an ambulance." I yelled, daring not to move from my spot, while Mary walked towards the body to get a closer look.

"It is just a dummy." Mary told me with no change in expression, whatsoever. I have never met anyone who could be this calm in a situation like this. I wonder is there anything in this world which can faze her, even the slightest.

I let out a breath I didn't realised I was holding. Mary started walking forward again and I accompanied her. I know what those two are planning. They are making this a haunted house just what the rumours said and they want us to become their first victims.

The dummy was just the beginning as we moved inside other frightening things were thrown at us. It scared the fit out of me each time I see
something uncanny there. I would have done a complete 180 degree if those two knuckleheads wouldn't have been my friends. I wanted to meet them and hang out with them, that is what kept me going all this time.

On the other hand Mary was complete opposite of me. Nothing got to her. Her brown hazel eyes shined red under the weird lights inside the villa, giving me the chills of my life.

We finally reached the last room of the villa. I stepped inside following after Mary as per the routine. Fortunately, nothing strange happened there and I was relieved thinking that it has been finally ended. But, my relief didn't last long as I heard footsteps outside the room. I grabbed Mary's arm tightly as a silhouette of a male appeared covering the door completely. In the dim light all I could see was a face covered with a gas mask, blood was spilled all over his shirt and he held a huge knife in his left hand, soaked in blood as well, which was enough to make me freak out. I was ready to swoon anytime soon now.

"Is it you Ronnie?" I heard Mary ask in her unfazed voice.

It was then I realised that this is also an act. The knife he was holding must be a fake as well.

Ronnie laughed trying to sound as dangerous as he could. He started trudging towards me, swinging his left arm in air, ready to stab me. Just then we heard someone else's voice. By the sound of the footsteps, I felt that he was running as fast as he could, trying to reach us. His tone was filled with distress and worry.

"Ronnie, wait. I messed up. The knife is –

His voice trailed off as he stood at the door watching helplessly because Ronnie's hand were already in motion and I closed my eyes in panic.

I felt something touching the skin of my stomach. A shiver ran down my spine. I felt uneasy and weird but I didn't felt any pain. I didn't felt like I have been stabbed. I sighed as I realised I've been tricked again. I started giggling, feeling ticklish because of the knife. Then, soon it turned into a hearty laugh. No matter how horrifying it was, it still was fun. Everything is fun when you are with friends, right?

As I came back to my senses, I gaped at the faces of my three friends, Mary, Ronnie and Jake. They looked like they had been stuck by lighting or something. They looked scared and pale. I have pale skin but they looked even paler. The flickering lights over my head made me feel like I was the one who was flickering. This was the first time I noticed fear on Mary's face and this alone was enough to make me realise that something had terribly gone wrong.

Ronnie looked at me then at my abdomen, then again at me. But, I couldn't see myself at all because he was standing so close to me. He suddenly backed off awkwardly, almost stumbling, knife still in his hand.

I wanted to ask what is wrong. Why are they so scared? Did I do something wrong? Did I say something wrong? But, as I parted my lips to speak, all of them started fleeting out of the room like a fish trying to get out of a hook. Ronnie dropped the knife as he ran and screamed in fear "Please, don't kill us."

Why would they think that I want to kill them? They are running like they have seen a ghost or something. I went and picked up the knife. To my surprise, it was REAL. The knife was not a fake. Did Ronnie stop mid way? Maybe what I felt was just its tip.

That was the last time we ever talked. No matter what I did, they started ignoring me like everyone else from the next day like I didn't exist. I don't know the reason why. I never had. I probably never will.
