His eyes twinkle with tears as he stares skyward at the stars, recalling each moment before releasing them with a deep breath.
"If you could take it all back and restart, would you do anything differently?" She whispers, reaching out to touch his face.
"If I could restart I wouldn't change a thing, except for maybe this part right here," his rough hand covers her small one and pushes it gently to her.
"But this is the part we have control over. We can stay here forever and just live! And be together!" She cries and he sighs deeply.
"You and I both know we could never be the same. It wouldn't work. All I can do now is give you a clean break."
She looks away and he grabs her chin, forcing her to look at him.
"It's better this way, we both know it," he urges, letting her go.
"Then why does it hurt so bad?" She whispers.
"It always hurts to let a good thing go. But that's how we'll remember it best. And one day, when we pass, you'll appreciate what I'm doing. And you'll realize that this is the only way."
A small, forced smile comes to her face.
"I'll never forget you," she murmurs as I swing a leg over my bike.
"I'll never meet anyone like you again. Never change, Meg." He starts it up and without a second glance he disappears into the night, taking a piece of her with him.
