It had been a couple of days since I had been sent down for being in possession of a Class A drug. As soon as I got brought into the prison, I was shown to my cell. This would by my home for the next two years. The cell was tiny, there was just enought room to move about, There walls were white. It looked very clinical. There was a bunk bed, which meant that I would be joined by another cell mate. Fingers crossed that they would be easy to get along with. There was a toilet and a sink in the corner of the cell. I sat down on the bottom bunk, this would be where I would be sleeping and probably spending the most of my time. I think it would be more comfortable sleeping on a cold, wooden park bench. I suppose there wasn't much I could really do about it. I couldn't stop myself from staring at the big, bold, black bars in the window. I kept praying praying for someone to come and save me from here. But I had a feeling that there wasn't really much point in doing that, as it wasn't going to happen.
I sat on the bed and I heard the sound of keys rattling. As I looked up I saw the cell door opening. A girl with light brown hair appeared in the doorway whilst been escorted by an officer. She didn't look too much younger than me.
'Play nicely girls,' the officer spoke before closing the door once more. There was an awkward silence between me and this girl.
'I'm Sophie,' I introduced myself. I might as well be the one to make the first move. She looked at me with her green eyes.
'I'm Megan,' she replied soon after.
'Nice to meet you,' I answered. The awkward silence was amongst us once again. She slowly shuffled her feet towards the bunk beds. I laid down on the uncomfortable bed as I listened to Megan move about. Even though we had only just met and haven't said much to one another, I think that I could of ended up with a worse cell mate. A few minutes passed, and still not much was said.
'So...what are you in for?' I questioned as I was getting sick of the sound of silence.
'Theft...I got kicked out of my family home and was living in a hostel. With not having any money, I had to find a way to survive and that involved stealing,' she revealed to me. 'What about you?'
Oh, it's a long story but i'm in here for a crime I didn't commit..no-one will believe me,' I answered.
'What crime would that be? If you don't mind me asking,' she consoled.
'Drugs...they found a bag of Class A drugs in my bag. I know I never put them in there, but I think I have a good idea of who might have,' I sighed.
'That sounds bad...How long did they give you?'
'Two years,' I replied.
'I'm in here for 6 months. I just hope it passes by quickly,' she said.
'I know that we have only just met, but I think if we stick together, we will get by,' I empathised.
'I like the sound of that,' she answered. We spent the rest of that night talking and we were getting on really well.
~Two weeks later~
Two weeks had now passed, and I was told that I was getting a visitor so I had to get myself ready. Whilst I was getting ready, I wondered who it could be. Soon, I was taken down to the visiting room and I sat and anticipated for my visitor to arrive. Eventually, a familiar bald looking guy walked towarss me. Max had come to see me, I felt relieved to see him.
'Hey Soph,' he embraced me with a big bear hug that lasted a while. 'I'm sorry I took so long, I had to make sure my hair looked good,' he winked as he sat down infront of me. I had missed Max and his so called funny jokes.
'You've got a lot of work to do then,' I smiled.
'How are you keeping?' he asked in a more serious tone.
'I'm just about hanging on...I have a nice cellmate which makes things slightly easier,' I informed him.
'Ah thats good to hear love,' he smiled.
'I just wanna come home now...I've had enough of being blamed for something I haven't done. I really don't like it in here Max,' I said as tears came to my eyes. Max put his hand over mine and held it tight.
'I'm gonna keep my word Soph. I'm gonna find the best people to help support your case and get you out of here. You're the last person who deserves to be in here. I can't say the same for your brother though,'.
'Have you heard from that brother of mine?' I asked. To be honest, I don't know why I am asking after what he had done to me.
'He's asked about you actually,' Max revealed.
'That's kind of him,' I replied sarcastically.
'Anyway, I have some news to tell you,' he smiled.
'What's that then?'.
'I finally got the guts to ask Ashley out on a date,' he grinned like a Cheshire cat.
'About bloody time,' I laughed.
'I know...I just had enough of being a pussy so I done it. I'm gonna take her out to dinner on Friday,'.
'She's gonna be a lucky girl. You will treat her like a princess,' I smiled as I was really happy for him.
'Thank you Soph,' he winked. Max and I chatted for another ten minutes. Unfortunately, the time for Max to leave had arrived. I really didn't want him to go.
'Stay strong Sophie,' he whispered into my ear as he hugged me goodbye. This brought a tear to my eyes as I wasn't so sure if I could stay strong. I watched Max walk away before I asked to go back to my cell.
As the day went on, I started my job in the prison. As a part of our sentence, we have to work. If we do well at the jobs, we would get some rewards. For example, we could get longer to talk to people on the phone. The main privelege was that it was added to our a good behaviour which could shorten your time behind bars. I had been instructed to work in the prison garden. I began to dig the soil and I could feel eyes on me. I know that there were officers watching us like hawks..but this felt different. I turned around to see a young officer staring at me. He wasn't stood too far away from me. To me, he didn't look old enough to be working in here. As I moved about during the afternoon, he would be there. I finally plucked up the courage to speak to him.
'Is there a reason why you're a following me? or are you stalking me for the fun of it?' I asked. He just smiled confidently.
'Officer Sykes at your service,'.
'What do you mean by 'at your service'?' I questioned as I raised an eyebrow.
'You and I are going to be spending a lot of time together,' he winked.
'And why would that be?' I quizzed him.
'I'm your personal officer Darling,'. My jaw dropped,
'So, basically you're my babysitter?' I asked.
'Well if you want to think of it like that, then yeah,' he smiled again. I couldn't help but stare at this smile. For an officer...he had a great smile. I shook that image out of my head and turned my back to him,
Hmm, this can either end well or badly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
End of Chapter 2!
