Chapter 10

I was standing in front of trees. It was dark. Rain lashed my face and the occasional flash of lightning lit the fields around me, throwing sharpened images of bushes and bracken at my retinas. Carried upon the angry wind were faint voices which hid amongst the whooshes and wishes of the weather.

There was another lightning flash, illuminating between the trees like a thousand torches burning as hunters pushed through the forest looking for their prey.

I saw, or thought I saw, someone sitting, leaning back against the trunk of a tree. Beside him was a woman. She looked like Jasmine, but somehow fresher. Less tired. More full of life. Even from the distance between us, she looked radiant.

The storm lit up the landscape once more and I sat up sharply.

I was in a bed, a thick quilt covering my lower body. I touched my hair, wondering why raindrops were not running down into my eyes.

It was dry.
