"This is just sad."
With a sigh and a roll of her chocolate brown eyes, Camila closes her book. She turns over the corner of her page to mark her place and sets the book down on her bedside table, finally looking up to meet Dinah's gaze.
She'd been enjoying some peace and quiet in her dorm room for once; the only time she gets that luxury is when Dinah is out of the room.
"Why are you criticising how I'm spending my Friday? I like reading. Why is it so sad?" Camila waits for her best friend's inevitable response of 'because it's boring'. It's safe to say she knows Dinah too well.
"Because, Mila," Dinah starts with an eye roll and Camila awaits the inevitable lecture about how she needs to socialise more, "we were invited to a party. An actual party. I'm not going to let you miss out on it. Your first college party is like a rite of passage."
Camila raises her eyebrows. "Really? Are you sure we were invited?"
"Of course I'm sure," Dinah scoffs and flops down next to Camila on her bed. "Why would you doubt me?"
"Because the last time we were 'invited' to a party, it turned out that we weren't invited. You were." Camila cringes at the memory. Back in high school, she wasn't exactly the most popular person on the planet. That was always Dinah. "Besides, I'm not really a party person. You know that. I'd rather stay in."
"We're both invited. I asked Normani if I could bring a friend when she invited me, and she said I could bring whoever I wanted. Pretty sure you're in the 'whoever I want' category. You're coming, okay?" Dinah crosses her arms over her chest and sends Camila a look that reads I'm putting my foot down.
Camila sighs, latching onto the person who'd invited Dinah. "Normani Kordei invited you?"
"Invited us, and yes." Dinah nods her head and sends Camila her best teasing smirk. "I know what you're thinking. You want to know if your girlfriend will be there."
Camila coughs, wishing she hadn't taken a sip of water then. Remind her not to drink or eat anything when Dinah is around. "I don't have a girlfriend. I was just wondering to myself if anyone I know will be there."
"You know a total of two people in our entire college and one of them is sitting right in front of you." Dinah states. "The other is the librarian."
"Shut up," Camila tries to sound at least slightly offended, but her amused grin kind of ruins that plan completely, "I know... people."
Dinah just laughs in response. "Come on, Mila. This party will give you the opportunity to talk to people and make new friends. Maybe you'll even have a chance to talk to Jauregui."
Of course Dinah would bring her up. Camila knows she should expect it by now; ever since her best friend found out about her crush, she came up in virtually every conversation, whether it be in a teasing manner, or some ridiculous scheme Dinah had invented to get Lauren to talk to her.
Camila has to admit that she appreciates her best friend's support – it's miles better than her friend kicking her to the curb the moment she found out she likes girls – but she knows that nothing will happen with Lauren. Naturally, Camila is pining after a girl she would barely be able to speak two words to, so she isn't even going to try. Better to be lonely and pining than embarrass herself in front of her crush.
"I'm not going to talk to Lauren," Camila quickly dismisses Dinah, "but if it means that much to you, I'll come to the party. You'll probably need someone sober to look after you, anyway."
Dinah's face breaks out into the biggest grin Camila's ever seen. "Thanks, Mila. You'll enjoy it. I promise."
For some reason, Camila really doubts that.
