My muscles instantly relax and I fall limp from the relief. Thank you! Thank you! Thank the lord I'm not dead!
This mantra replays over and over in my head as I thank god for my good fortune. Then a grunt of annoyance suddenly radiates from behind me and rumbles against my back. The small huff of breath caresses the skin behind my ear and sends shivers racing down my spine. That's when I suddenly remember I'm being held in the arms of a complete stranger.
I basically launch myself from his grasp and almost expose myself to the hordes in the process. Luckily the stranger grabs my wrist and pulls me back against the wall once again. "Would you please sit still and shut up! You're going to get us killed." His deep, gravely voice whispers in aggravation. I'm just about to give this prick a piece of my mind when I finally look up at him through the veil of my knotted hair.
His eyes are what captivate me first. Bright, glowing green with golden, yellow flecks. The intensity of them locks and holds me in place. His dark hair is messy and slightly damp with sweat. It sticks up in an unruly mess like he's just been in a fist fight. A hint of stubble is just beginning to make an appearance along his jaw. In other words, he's the definition of sex god.
I assume he takes my silence as agreeing to obey his earlier demands because he turns to peek around the side of the building, most likely inquiring if our cover has been broken or not.
Veins in his neck bulge as he surveys the car park and his shirt clings to his back muscles with sweat like he's been running for his life. Which by the looks of the university right now, wouldn't come as a surprise...
I snap myself out of my obvious gaping and chastised myself for acting like a star struck groupie, especially at a time like this. I'm so stupid! Getting all worked up when I could become some crazy persons dinner at any moment.
'You don't even know who he is!' My subconscious whispers to me. 'He might turn out to be just as psycho as the rest of them!'
I compose my features just in time for him to turn back to me. His eyes lock onto mine again and it takes all I have not to let my mouth drop open in awe. His commanding voice seems to resonate towards me as he speaks. "Now that I've saved your life, you have to help me."
I clear my throat, speaking for the first time to this mysterious saviour. "Help you with what?" I ask cringing at how shaky my voice comes out.
His eyes furrow and a pained expression crumples his perfect features. My heart wrenches at his obvious fear. "I need to find my sister. She lives on campus." He states, worry lacing every syllable.
His words suddenly send a jolt of anxiety through me as I remember Sheridan! How can I be so self centred that I forget about my best friend! I haven't even spared a thought for her safety! I'm a fucking shitty friend.
Tears well in my eyes as I think of the possibility that she could be hurt or dead. Or even worse... one of them.
"I can't help you, I'm sorry." I manage, my vocals choked with emotion.
I begin to walk away from him so as to not let him see me cry but his firm arms clamp against the wall, either side of my head, effectively trapping me against the bricks. "You won't last ten seconds out there alone. If you leave, you're dead." His hot breath fans over my face as he whispers fiercely.
I stare down at my sneakers, refusing to look him in the eyes. Partly because I feel like I'm about to bawl and also partly because of the blush staining my pale cheeks.
"Look at me." He commands, obviously aggravated.
I ignore him chewing on my lip nervously. Out of the corner of my eye I see his fists clench and unclench at the sides of my head. "Look. At. Me." He pronounces in words so low I can barely even hear.
Scared at his threatening tone of voice, I decide to swallow my pride and do as he says. When I do I can't hold back anymore. A tear escapes and drips down my cheek. His intense, green eyes see this and they soften just the tiniest bit.
Closing his eyes, he takes a deep calming breath before speaking. "Please. I have no idea if my sister is alive, dead or one of those things." He states in disgust. "She's a smart girl and I have faith that she's safe and holed up somewhere waiting for me to find her. And trust me..." He states his voice lowering. "I will find her with or without your help." His voice suddenly turning deadly.
"Help from someone, however, who actually knows their way around this place would just speed the process up is all." He finishes, leaning away from me, allowing me to finally take even breathes.
His story breaks my heart and I want to help him, don't get me wrong! But... I can't just put my best friend on the back of my to do list so I can go help some stranger.
"I have people I need to make sure are safe as well. I can't just come with you." I state, sounding a lot more confident with my decision than earlier.
He sighs and begins to pace. He runs his hands through his hair in frustration causing it to look more unruly than it already was. He does this a couple more times as he paces, seemingly deep in thought. "How about this?" He finally begins. "If you take me to the places I need to go in order to find my sister, I'll come with you after that to help you find whoever it is you care about. That way I'd have someone to lead me around this hell hole and you'll have an actual chance of survival. Deal?"
I'm about to refuse again when a high pitched, guttural screech echoes across the car park. Both our heads snap to the side at once.
A guy, who looks about twenty something, is sprinting across the wide expanse of gravel with a horde of at least twenty creatures on his heals. They almost snatch his shoulders when he slides across the bonnet of a small white car near the centre of the gravel pit. This manoeuvre effectively cuts them off causing them to have to go around.
He's almost away when a creature, who's legs have been chewed to pieces, reaches out from beneath another parked vehicle. He trips and then it's all over. The horde is instantly upon him and all that can be heard are the tearing of flesh and his screams.
My mouth forms an o as a scream gurgles up my throat. Thankfully a warm hand clamps around my mouth silencing me. He then begins dragging me deeper into the little alley between the two buildings, providing further cover from the ravenous horde of cannibals.
The sudden realisation dawns on me. He's right. I'll die out there. I'll die before I even get to Sheridan's classroom.
"If I take my hand away, you're not going to scream right?" He whispers bluntly. I shake my head vigorously and he finally lets go.
As soon as he does I'm facing him and agreeing to his terms. I realise now that my best chances of survival and saving Sheridan are if I stick with him. There's no other options for me.
"Deal."
