The people of Knaura cowered in their shelters. The dam protecting them creaked eerily, ready to break in an instant. Families huddled together and the whimpers of little children filled the silence. The gush of water behind the dam was quiet but ever-present and the fear-filled moments it evoked teased the people of Knaura, threatening to be their last. Era sat in her attic, legs pressed to her chest, head lolling absentmindedly on her knee. Her right hand drew patterns in the dirty, either sand, ash or soot debris that layered the floor. In a sotto voice, she hummed an old lullaby, keeping herself distracted. Her family cowered in the room beneath hers, whispering final loving words and holding each other tight. Sobs and sniffles sounded from below and a mothers voice lovingly cooed them away. Era bite back the bitter feeling of jealously, physically, she was created perfectly, she didn't need water or food having the miraculous addition of plant DNA, but emotionally she grew up without knowing affection. When her lab got shut down, she was forced to cater to humans as a maid of sorts.
A vacuum
She thought dryly.
A robotic maid, I'm a vacuum.Shaking away negative thoughts of her old life, she focused on the upcoming disaster. The humans couldn't tell it but the humidity she sensed in the air and the structural damage, invisible to the naked eye, was telling her all she needed to know.
A tsunami would hit.
It'd be extremely deadly, severely wounding some and fatally killing others. Her eyes flickered to the family she had downstairs.
The father, Steven would make it. He worked in a heavy duty construction place, his immune system and body could eventually recover from the impact the tsunami would leave.
The mother, Alice would also die. Era couldn't predict the future but she could have guesses more accurate than any computers in existence. Alice had a lung injury, a childhood lung infection left too long untreated, some damage was permanent by the time she was brought to a hospital. The salt in the air after the tsunami would be enough to reinfect her lungs, fatally so, that Alice wouldn't make it either way.
Macy, her little sister would be killed on impact. A six year old would never survive a tsunami, no matter how protected she'd be.
A twinge of sadness flashed though Era as she mourned the small loss. It was a shame, Macy really deserved better. Finally, Agnaes, her wretched grandmother. Agnaes was the sister of Alice's deceased mother but despite that she insisted the family call her "grandmama", with the exception of Era calling her "Ma'am".
She would be dead and with a little contempt, Era relished in the small victory that came with grandmother Agnaes getting her sweet desserts. Her train of thought dying down, Era began to feel boredness creeping up into her head. Suddenly her ears caught a peculiar sound. Little cracks, quieter than a heartbeat, she focused in on the sound and pleasantly discovered it was the dam. Era, had been silently looking forward to the tsunami. Her android body would protect her, no doubt and her super human features would leave her totally capable, her life was about to change for the best. Eagerly she edged as close as she could to the musky window. Wiping violently to get a better view she propped herself up resting her elbows on the window frame. She zoned in, determining the bigger structural flaws, trying to figure out how much longer.
The girders!
The girders were a state mandated feature so the least amount of effort possible was given. They'd give in any second now, giving way for the wall to crumble and the first and deadliest wave to wreak havoc.
As predicted the girders flew off the dam and the concrete of the dam crackled and crumbled down, only to be washed away by the angry rush of water. The gigantic wave flew through the city and the screams and crashes all became white noise to Era. She peacefully laid flat in her attic and waited to be washed away. She felt the support beams of her house crash under pressure and she heard Macy's scream turn to a terrible gurgle.
Era cringed.
Damn
She closed her eyes as the water rushes around her head. Her metal heart and android implants sunk her slightly but the violent waves kept her mid level. She willingly let her conscience float away as she waited for the water to finish ravishing through Knaura. With no need for air she floated aimlessly, paying no mind to the violent tugs of the tsunami.
It'll all be over soon
She'd live freely soon.
