It was already the end of September. The season slowly started to truly look like autumn with the leaves turning into all of these beautiful shades of orange and brown. Although the sun was still up and shinning, it didn't make the weather any less cold with the strong winds blowing. Although the car ride was a bit long, the scenery kept me distracted from my thoughts.
They say home is where the heart is. I was still looking for my home in order to find my heart.
My eyes wondered around, staring at the street signs and houses that we were passing by. I was bored to the point where I started to count how many red cars we would pass by. My headache didn't exactly make it more enjoyable either.
"Are you excited for your new home Christine? You'll love this place, I promise. I know one of the supervisors there and she's just lovely." Avery said as she tapped her index finger against the steering wheel to the rhythm of my favourite Pink Floyd song.
"I don't know really. I mean what's so special about another foster home? It's not like I'll be staying long since I'll be turning eighteen in less than a year." I blandly replied as I reached forward to my water bottle that was sitting in the cup holder.
"I know it may seem that way, but you should try to be a little bit optimistic about it hun. The next couple of months may actually change your life. A lot of things can happen within that time period you know." I genuinely laughed at her comment because I knew this was going to lead into one of her all so famous pep talks.
Her pep talks weren't always the greatest. She would add cheesy quotes from chick flicks that she had read or saw in the past in order to make the moment seem more meaningful. Sometimes she would try to quote song lyrics and get them wrong.
Before she could start her hour long pep talk, I began to sing along to tongue tied by GroupLove. Soon enough she joined in with me. For a thirty-something year old, she was pretty cool.
The car slowly pulled over to the side of the road. I stepped out of Avery's car and took a good look at my surroundings. Right in front of my eyes was a two story house that I'll be staying at for the next couple of months.
Today was the day that I would be moving into my new home, it'll also be the day that I'll be meeting my new foster family. I was supposed to meet them beforehand two weeks ago, but something came up so that never got to happen.
Nerves started to set in once I stepped through the front door. I hated meeting new people, I just never knew what to say. They always have that look on their face where it looks like they're judging you from head to toe.
"Christine, you look like such a lovely young lady. Just call me Melissa. I'm really happy that you get to be the new addition to my home. Let me introduce you to your other foster sister and brothers," a women in her mid-fifties said in a soft and gentle voice. She smiled as she led me and Avery into the living room. No other kids were present in the room yet since they wouldn't be home until another ten minutes because of school according to Melissa.
"Christine, I'm so sorry hun but they just called me into an emergency at the office." As much as I wanted Avery to stay just a bit longer, I understood that she had a job to get to. She had at least ten other kids to attend to. I nodded, telling her that it was ok.
"Call me anytime if you need me Christine. I may be your worker but I'm also your friend. Ok?" I rolled my eyes at her comment, but yet I still smiled knowing what she was saying was true. Avery has been my worker for over twelve years, and never has there been a time she didn't pick up my call.
