“What on earth happened to you? And why does your bike look like it’s been hit by a truck?”

Penny ignored the tons of question from her mother and walked up the stair to her room. After all the events she didn’t have an ounce of energy to do anything, not to mention being investigated by her worry mother.

But who said her mother will give up so easily.

“Darling, you better tell me what happened or no ice-cream for a month.”

Penny instantly shot up at the mention of ice-cream. No ice-cream! For a month!

She couldn’t live through a day without ice-cream. One month would be a real torture, she has no choice.

“I give up, you win ma’.”

“Don’t I know it?” A chuckle left her mom’s red lips. Unlike Penny’s brunette wave, her mother has a shoulder-length blonde hair. But the hair color was not the only obvious thing  that made people think her mother had picked up the wrong baby at the hospital, it was their size.

Penny’s mother was tall and lean. She was a swimmer, a good one, until she decided to become a full time housewife. Having a mother with slim figure and pretty face, none could expect that the child from this beauty would come out chubby, short and possessed a plain face.

“So what’s wrong?”

“Don’t be mad okay? I was riding my bike down the road a little bit too fast and suddenly a little girl appeared from nowhere in front of me.

I hit the brake at fast as I could and luckily it stopped just in time that her brother push her out of the way. But with the brake so abrupt, I flew away from the bike and landed on top of that girl’s brother.”

She intentionally neglected the detail of her terrible love confession. It’s too embarrassing and painful, even if the one she would divulge it on was her mother.

Penny stopped to catch her breath and scanned her mother’s face for any sign of anger, but all she could find was a shock expression.

“Why didn’t you call me?! Is he alright? Are you alright?” Her mother started searching frantically for any sign of wound on Penny’s body.

“I’m fine ma’ though I wish I could say the same for that guy. He’s at the hospital with a broken rib and head” Penny’s face fell at the thought of her victim. She wished and hoped he’s alright.

“We’ll go visiting him tomorrow then. Don’t worry so much. You don’t want a wrinkle on that pretty face of yours, do you?”

“Please, one wrinkle won’t make my face more hideous.” Penny dismissed her mother’s regard sadly.

“What did I tell you about that kind of attitude? It won’t-.”

“It won’t take me anywhere.”

“Yes, exactly. Beside, you are beautiful. No matter what others say, and I didn’t say this just because I’m your mother.” Penny’s mother said before she could rebut her. “Beauty is in the eyes of beholder. If one can see it then it’s their loss, not yours.”

“Even though I didn’t believe you, I appreciate your words ma’, thank you.”

Penny offered her mother a grateful smile, and in return the blonde hair lady gave her daughter a kiss on the forehead.

“Sweet dream darling.”

“Sweet dream.”

Penny rub her sweaty hands on her free size jean as she stood nervously outside the hospital room, where Carter resided.

Despite the plan she and her mother had made to come to the hospital together, her mother was called urgently to work and Penny was left to go visit her victim by her own.

The guilt formed in her instantly and the idea of visiting now seem daunting. Maybe she should come another day when her mother could accompany her.

No. She needed to be brave and independent.

Taking a deep breath Penny pushed the door with all her might, and the door collided with some figure.

“What the-”

A curse flew from another side of the door at that exact minute.

“I’m so sorry! Are you alright?” Penny walked toward the door while her lips mumbled frantically. She couldn’t be this clumsy, could she?

“Do I look alright?”

Carter glared darkly as he cupped his right feet with both of his hands. The moment he saw the culprit, a scold formed on his face. “You! What wrong I’ve done you in the past life that you are so adamant to hurt me!”

Penny’s guiltiness suddenly evaporated and her anger replaced it. How could he be so mean? It wasn’t like she did it on purpose anyway.

“It was an accident!, no need to be childish.”

“Me? Childish?” A sarcastic laugh left Carter’s lips. “I’m the childish one while this whole accidents come from you?”

“If you didn’t stand on my way, none of this would happen.” Penny respond back though she knew her words were ridiculous and he was right. It’s her fault. Everything.

“Oh so now you blame me?” Carter ran his hand through his chocolate hair frustratedly and walked, struggling, to his bed. “Even children know when to be responsible for their action.”

If there's any guilt left in her then, it’s now all gone.

Carter knew how to pull the dark side of her out and she’s now seriously considering to grant him him a smack on the head.

For a second, that idea sounded so alluring that she took one step closer to Carter. But before she could do anything, a familiar voice interrupted her thought.

“Now now children, there’s no need to start a fight, isn’t it?”
