A/N: The photo above is the beach I've pictured for this scene to take place! It's one of the best beaches in North Carolina, which is easy to see! Enjoy the next chapter :)
Jasmine's P.O.V
June 18A few hours and several bags of pretzels later, Archie is almost through learning all the beginner chords I usually give my students over the course of a week. He's a natural at this, and when I told him that he just shrugged his broad shoulders and shook his head. I think he doesn't want to get too excited about it in case his dad isn't a fan.
"How old were you when you learned?" Archie asks me as he strums a C chord again.
"Twelve." I answer. "So that's going to make it just about five years."
"You seem to know so much for such a short time." He tells me, and I lean forward to correct the placement of his pointer finger. I feel my heart race a little as my skin touches his.
I smile a little as I correct it and let go. "I just had a really good teacher." I look up and our eyes meet. He's got such deep brown eyes, endless really. Man why have I had the urge to kiss this guy since I set eyes on him a couple of hours ago?
My mind then darts to Steve, my former instructor. Steve was a great teacher and mentor. Just not the best person. But Archie didn't need to know that. "And I practiced like crazy. That's the biggest part of this Archie; momentum. You have to keep yourself rolling otherwise it's easy to fall behind." I explain, having seen it happen with my own students before. He nods. "I can do that." He says to me, and with the natural talent and drive he has I'm positive he can.
"Then you'll be set to go Andrews." I say and I watch as he lets go and flexes his playing hand. "Yeah, get used to that. It's gonna be a learning curve for your muscles to adjust." I explain. "So how about we take a quick break? I wanna play with Vegas, come on."
I stand up quickly and set my guitar down against my seat and grab his hand. Archie laughs and scrambles to put his down as well.
I've never been able to judge a character as well as I can judge his. He's good. I know that for fact. The son of a hard working business owner, with separated parents and living in a small town trying to make a big football dream happen..it's a romance novel checklist of 'good guy material'.
We run on to the beach, Vegas bounding along behind us. Archie lets go of my hand to touch Vegas before running away. Vegas then chases him until tagging Archie back by his nose. Then I realize their game and join in, all of us taking turns being 'it'.
We're right on the water's edge when it's Archie's turn to tag either me or Vegas. By the look on his face when his eyes meet mine I know who he's chosen as his target.
I set off sprinting through the water. We're already wet, my shorts and shirt clinging to me and Archie the same. I scream as I feel myself lose my footing in the soft sand and go scrambling through the waves trying to regain it. But by then Archie has his arms around my middle and lifts me out and spins me around.
"I caught you! I caught you!" He laughs as I kick against him, laughing myself. My stomach hurts from all the laughing we've done all day and Vegas is barking as he watches us.
Archie sets me down and I spin to face him.
"You may have caught me but I think out of all the times I've been 'it' and you've been 'it', I by far have caught you more times than you ever caught me." I say as I poke him in the chest. My finger hits muscle and I feel myself bite my cheek when it does. Can he be any more good looking?
Archie grins at me, that million dollar boyish grin that could break hearts of girls around the world. He has his brows raised and steps forward to challenge my statement.
"If that's so, then why are you so eager to defend yourself huh? I think you're just trying to talk a big game because Jasmine Rockwell is worried about losing!" He exclaims laughing as he shakes his head.
I narrow my eyes as I lean even closer.
"Try me." I say. Then with that he ducks under me and has me over his shoulder in the fireman style. He stomps through the waves, splashing my face and making me sputter out the water. He's having a hell of a time since he hasn't stopped laughing, and I myself have a hard time containing it too.
He swings me back around so I'm standing upright in front of him. We're way down the beach now, away from my parents' house. Both of us continue trying to catch our breath.
"Wow," sighs Archie as he steadies his breathing. "This has been a hell of a day."
"I know, you learned guitar, ate more pretzels than thought humanly possible, and just lost at your own game." I smirk and he shakes his head with a hint of a smile.
"This is the most fun I've had in a long time." He says and when his eyes meet mine I feel my heart pitter patter a bit faster. "Thank you for today Jasmine."
I smile and shrug, fighting off a blush. He makes me feel happier than I want to admit. One day and I'm already so hooked on his boyish grin and infectious laugh.
"Don't thank me yet, I still have to make you a damn good musician by the time you leave." I say with a laugh and he smiles as we start to walk back down the beach.
"I wish I had longer here; North Carolina is pretty great so far." He says and I raise a brow and look over to him.
"Oh yeah?" I ask with a smirk. "Anything in particular come to mind?"
He chuckles and nods, holding my gaze. "A few things."
I smile and look down to my feet, squishing into the soft sand and leaving footprints behind me. I look over my shoulder and see the trail Archie and I have made. My feet look much smaller next to his, and I giggle at the contrast.
"What?" Archie asks and I look to him and shake my head.
"Nothing. Just your feet are a lot bigger than mine are." I say with a little laugh and he looks behind us and chuckles as well.
"It's just that I don't have little pixie feet." He says and I gasp and hit his arm. He shrinks away and laughs harder.
"They are not pixie feet! I actually have pretty large feet for a girl, I'm just not six foot whatever with gargantuan feet." I defend and Archie stops walking, so I do too.
He stands up a little straighter and steps closer, making himself square to me. I do the same, realizing he's trying to gauge my height against his. I look directly at his adam's apple when he's like this.
"Well if I'm six feet tall, that would make you...five eight and a half?" He guesses and I look up to glare at him. He laughs and puts his hands on either side of my head to force me to look back down so I'm level again. "Stop moving you goof, I'm trying to take some measurements here." He chuckles and I roll my eyes.
"Right, measurements as in completely eyeballing it." I snicker.
Archie shakes his head and shrugs. "I mean I'm trying here but you're not cooperating. So I'll say you're five eight and a half but that might not be accurate because of your interference."
I look back up at him, amused. "Interfering can be fun though." I say, and i feel his hands come back up again. But instead of going to the sides of my head, he puts them on either side of my face.
He's so close I can feel the heat coming off of him, smell the salt and the brine which has been soaked into his skin and clothing. His brown eyes scan over my face, and his lips are curved into a smile. I feel my heart rate just about double at his movements, and my stomach is flopping about with excitement and nervousness about what is to come next.
"I really like you Jasmine." He says, his left thumb brushing my cheek. "I know it's only been one day but, I do. It's pretty crazy." He chuckles and without thinking twice about anything-- like the fact he lives somewhere else, how we could never be together, and that I will never see him again after the end of this week-- I rise up onto my toes and press my lips to his.
