Carolines p.o.v
I got in my car and started the engine sighing to myself. I hate this part of the day. Any normal person my age is in utter bliss at the thought of school being over but me, it wasn't that simple. I'd take school over home any day.
As I got home I pulled into the driveway sitting for awhile, dreading the thought of going in. However, you can only sit in a car for so long.
I walked in, instantly hit with the smell of beer and stale cigarettes. To no surprise it was quiet.
"Thank god" I whispered to myself
I set my bag down and quietly walked into the kitchen making sure to lighten my footsteps as I walked past the living room. I opened the cupboards and the fridge and of course, there was nothing. I walked back into the hallway opening the cabinet pulling out the large jar we kept stored in the back. I reached in and I really shouldn't have been so surprised to feel nothing but a few nickels and the rigid plastic.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me." I said quietly, rolling my eyes. I thought about just going out and buying something with my money but we're already late on rent and on the brink of eviction and that would just be something else for him to bitch about.
I put the jar back and closed the cabinet door before storming into the living room. Very little did I have the courage to give him attitude, but when he does shit like this, I get so pissed I can't even help myself even though by now I should damn well know better.
I stood in front of him on the couch passed out, bottle of jack in one hand, ashtray beside him with a cigarette still burning.
"Wake up."
He stirred a bit, turning over and waving me off with his free hand.
"I need money."
"Fuck off" he snarled
"Can you not pull your shit together for 5 seconds"
He sat up, rubbing his face with his hands before opening the bottle of jack and chugging the remaining contents.
"Don't you." He started pointing his finger at me, his voice sounding calm and firm but I can already tell calm is the last thing he's about to be.
"Don't you come in here. Waking me up. And telling me" he snarled, the level of his voice rising "- telling me what you need. DEMANDING. I give you money, you UNGRATEFUL little bitch.
"Well." I began, my voice quiet. "I wouldn't be "demanding" anything if there was food in the house."
"There is food in the house. Open your fucking eyes Caroline." He spat
"Sure there is, if I'm gonna make dinner out of fucking mayonnaise and soda crackers." I snarled back.
"WATCH YOUR FUCKING MOUTH. YOU'RE STILL UNDER MY ROOF" he yelled standing up of the couch getting in my face.
"Can you just give me some money. Please" I said quietly, knowing I was pushing his limits.
"Use the money in the fucking Jar you idiot."
"There is none."
"What the fuck do you mean" he growled sitting back down on the couch.
"I mean you probably spent it all on booze and cigarettes. Not to mention, you left one burning again while you were asleep. You're gonna burn the fucking house down." I said staring him dead in the face
He stood back up smashing the jack bottle "I said watch your fucking mouth or get the fuck out of my house" he said, his voice low.
"Your house?" I laughed "you're house? You mean the one I pay for, because god knows if I didn't work my ass of we wouldn't have a house."
"GET THE FUCK OUT" he screamed pushing me back a few feet.
"GLADLY." I yelled back turning and running up the stairs to get my stuff.
Once I got up he stairs I stomped down the hallway and into my room. I shuffled things around in my closet pulling out my suitcase and started throwing in everything I could possibly fit. I lugged my suitcase down the stairs and put on my shoes halfway through the door I stopped.
"Hey by the way dad, rents late."
"Fuck -"
I slammed the door before he could finish and jumped in my car. I started the engine as quick as possible and just started driving. I didn't know where but I just kept driving. I've felt like I've had no place to go a lot of times the past 7 years by for the first time, I really had no where to go.
•
After hours of driving I found myself completely lost and even though the sun was about to set it still felt like the hottest day ever. And of course my shit can of a car has no air conditioning.
I pulled into a gas station parking lot and went into the store.
I walked in and went straight to the chocolate bar isle. If I got one thing, it's a sweet tooth. I grabbed some chocolate and a bag of sour candies and proceeded to the cash. The cashier rang in my things and I gave her a smile as I took the bag and headed for the door. As I opened the door my heart sank. There was my car, right were I left it.. however I didn't recall the cloud of smoke now surrounding it.
"Fuck fuck FUCK" I said running over to it. As soon as I lift the hood a huge cloud of smoke engulfs me.
"This can not be fucking happening" I whine in desperation. I sat down beside my car and turn on my phone. Of course if anyone's gonna help me get out of this mess, it's gonna be Bridget. Bridget's been my best friend for as long as I can remember, our bare ass baby pictures say it all. I know if I call her she'll pull through no matter what time it is. I dial her number and as soon as it rings the first time, it goes dead. Of fucking course my phones gonna die. Now of all times.
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME" at this point I don't even care who thinks I'm crazy. This day has been way too much to handle.
I sat beside my car in defeat, looks like I'm shit outta luck.
After about 20 minutes of sitting in the gas station parking lot, an all too familiar motorcycle pulled up beside a gas pump. Wow. God is really fucking with me today. I stay seated not saying a word praying maybe he won't see me. I watch as he arrogantly pumps his gas running his hands through his hair and nonchalantly walking into the store. After about 3 minutes he walks back out looking to his right and then his left, right at me. He did a double take and when he finally registered it was me the biggest smile appeared on his face. Here we go.
"Is that who I think it is?" He smirked changing his direction, coming towards me
"Nope." I say avoiding eye contact
"Oh what a shame, because I almost thought it was my Caroline." He smiled
"I'm not 'your' anything." I said bluntly
"Alright alright, take it easy" he said coming closer towards me "what're you sitting on the ground for anyways and all the way out here for that matter?"
"Why do you think" I roll my eyes motioning to my smoking car
"Yeah that doesn't look so good, how can I help? Need a lift?"
"I don't need anything from you." I say with a fake smile
"So you want me to go?" He says cocking his eyebrow
"That would be greatly appreciated" I say in a phoney voice
"Okay fine, anything to please you" he smiles turning around to walk back to his bike "I suggest you get in your car, the coyotes'll be out soon" he said. I couldn't see his face but I could tell he was wearing the biggest, cockiest smile.
I was gonna let him walk away, but as stubborn as I am, I'm not staying out here all night.
"Wait." I groaned
He stopped in his tracks turning to face me, with a clueless look on his face, acting like he isn't bathing in the fact that he's won. "Mhhm?" He smiled
"Could I just use your phone?" I said rolling my eyes
"I thought you didn't need anything from me?"
"I don't."
"Oh okay, I'll be on my way then." He turned back around
"Dylan. What do you want" I said quietly
"Admit you need me." He smiled
"Seriously?" I said raising my eyebrow
He smiled cupping his ear and leaning towards me.
"Fine. I need you" I whispered
"Pardon? I couldn't hear you" he said with a straight face
"I said. I need you."
"Well Caroline, if you need me you should have just said so!" He laughed. Pulling his phone out of his back pocket and handing it to me. I clicked the home button and his lock screen opened to a photo of a wet, half naked supermodel sprawled across a Harley Davidson.
"Nice background." I said sarcastically
He just flashed me a smile and ran his hands through his hair.
I quickly dial Bridget's number impatiently waiting as it rings and rings.
"Hello?" She said in a confused and oddly professional voice.
"Hey Bridget its Caroline.. are you busy?"
"Oh hey care! I'm never too busy for you what's up?" She said cheerfully
"So I'm at this gas station and my car broke down and I can't go home and I really just need you to come get me." At this point I was close to tears, something about unloading everything to Bridget always made me just let go and pour everything out. But there was no way I was gonna cry in front of Dylan.
"Um.. ya sure I'm putting my shoes on right now.. where are you?" She said, she sounded like she was struggling, the way you sound when you have your phone pressed up against your face and your shoulder whilst doing something totally unrelated.
I looked around for a minute "the gas stations called 'quicky'? I don't know its in the middle of no where like a good 20 minutes past the old abandoned movie theatre"
"Jesus Caroline! You owe me for this, I'll be there in like half an hour or so.. and - who's phone are you using?" She questioned
If I told her she'd flip her shit, she's always told me to go for Dylan, him being the bad boy and everyone drooling over him. I mean I won't lie, he's definitely not ugly but I don't do bad boys and it's simple as that.
"Uhhm some guy who works here let me use his phone. Anyways just hurry up it's starts to get cold out here"
"Alright alright I'm on my way- see you soon"
I handed the phone back to Dylan.
"Some guy who works here huh?" He said raising an eyebrow
"It's just easier that way" I said quickly not wanting him to know about how she goes on and on about how we'd be the 'perfect' couple. I rubbed my hands together trying to create some warmth. It's always scolding hot out here but as soon as the sun goes down, it's literally the polar opposite.
"Are you cold?" He asked actually looking concerned, an emotion I've never seen from Dylan.
"We both know you don't care Dylan" I said rolling my eyes and proceeding to try and create some sort of warmth.
"You know Caroline.. I'm not all bad." He said quietly
"Yeah okay, I'll believe it when I see it" I snarled.
He got up and stared to walk away
"Well clearly you don't want your friend finding out I'm here so I better get going.. see you around Caroline." He smiled walking away
"Dylan.."
"Yeah?" He said turning around and raising his eyebrows at me
"Thank you" I smiled.
"Anytime Caroline" he smiled and walked away.
I watched him as he got on his bike and drove away. I couldn't believe that out of all the people in the world, the person who finds me all the way out here in but fuck nowhere is Dylan. Talk about a knight in a leather jacket.
I guess I'd been stuck in my thought longer than I thought because as soon as I looked up, I saw Bridget's car pull into the parking lot.
She pulled up beside me and unlocking the doors and rolling down her window.
"Holy fuck care! What did you do to your car!?" She laughed
"It's not funny Bridget! Im gonna have to work my ass off for the next two weeks to pay to fix it, if I'm lucky!" I whined
"Oh shut up. I'll bring it in and get it fixed for you tomorrow" she said rolling her eyes
"You will not! Bridget you know I don't like feeling like a charity case."
"Hush. I'll even let you pay me back. Now drop the subject." She smiled
I've always wished my life was like Bridget's. Her parents are happily married, both of them lawyers so you already know what that mean$, she's got an older brother who she would never admit she loves so much, and things just always work out for her. It's a real wonder how we stay best friends when we're basically from 2 different planets.
"Hurry up and get in before the animals come out!" She laughed
"Okay one sec just gotta grab my suitcase"
"Suitcase?" She questioned
"I'll explain everything later, just bring me anywhere but home."
"Sir yes sir" she smiled.
