The microwave pings as the popcorn is finished popping. I grab out the bowl and head back over to where Hunter is sitting on the couch. I put the bowl in between us and take a few pieces then pop them in my mouth.

He eats a few pieces of popcorn himself before starting the story of his life.

"As you know I am classed as the 'new kid' but really I am just coming home again from Los Angles! The only reason I moved there was because I got in a terrible fight with the jocks that lead to a few of us in hospital."

I look at him with shock and take a few more pieces of popcorn wondering how and where this story is going.

"I used to be really good friends with them, Cole, Dom, Bryn and Aiden. We were like a pack, so close together it was almost impossible to pull us apart. But then a new girl came to school and shit started to go down between us. Aiden, Cole and I started to like her, you can probably guess what happened after that.

"So she started to talk to all of us and hang out with us slowly getting closer to each of us. So Aiden, Cole and I made a deal that none of us were allowed to tell her how we felt and if she liked us back then we had to tell everyone and see what they said, but everyone knew if she liked one of us the others wouldn't allow it."

He grabs some popcorn and looks at me. "Can I get a drink?" He asks me and I nod. He gets up and walks into the kitchen.

Boys and their rules with girls. I mean girls have 'the girl code' but still I feel like guys take things into a whole new level!

Hunter comes back in with a glass of water and sits back down. He thinks for a little before continuing his story.

"So one night we went to a party and got pretty drunk, I was the sober driver and so I dropped everyone off one by one when the party had ended. Trinity, that's the girls name, was the last person for me drop off in our group but when we got to her house no one was home. So I stayed and waited for her to go to sleep but she insisted that I stayed the night with her.

"She said she had to tell me something that she's been wanting to tell me for a while. And I got nervous and I didn't know what was going on in her head, but I had a feeling it wasn't going to be good for me. We are sitting on her bed and she puts her hand on mine. I instantly know what is going on and try to back out of it but she just comes closer.

"'Out of all the guys in our little group you are my favourite Hunter, I've liked you since day one and will always like you the most', she said to me. I knew she was drunk but I didn't think this would happen. She leaned in to kiss me and at that moment I totally forgot about the deal I made with the guys. I kissed her back and I liked it, I broke the deal and the guys found out the next day somehow."

I look at him with curiosity, this is one hell of a story. I didn't think there was so much behind him that probably most people don't know. Secrets are a terrible thing, they can hunt you down and destroy you from the inside out.

Hunter takes a sip of water and grabs some popcorn before beginning. I thought he was joking about the popcorn at first, then I realised I had some so we made it.

"Okay so I ended up staying the night in her bed and the next morning she didn't forget anything, it was a set up, she hadn't been drinking at all and apparently Cole had told her to act like she liked me to see what would happen. So the next school day didn't go so well when she told him that his planned worked and he got the other guys to gang up on me."

My mouth drops. So I'm not the only person who has had back stabbing best friends. It fucking hurts, having everyone you need one day and then next minute you have no one. It happens in the blink of an eye, you could be laughing at your inside jokes and next thing you know your yelling your heads off at each other.

For the past few years all I've wanted was to talk, to have a friend and to feel loved. Yes I have my mum but that's not enough sometimes. As Ariel said once, I want more...

I feel a single tear roll down my cheek and I quickly wipe it away hoping Hunter didn't see it, but he did.

"What's the matter?" He looks at me concerned and I try to show him a smile but it doesn't work.

I grab my whiteboard and write, I've been in your position before, or something like it. My best friend turned against me and now, I'm like how I am...

"There is nothing wrong with who you are Katerina, being Mute doesn't make you worse than everyone else. It makes you different, but a good different, the type of different that people admire you they don't know why but they admire you, us."

I give him a confused look this time and he puts a hand on my shoulder, like what he does around school, but this time its more comforting.

"I've told you my history with the boys but I still haven't answered your question. I am like you Katerina, I've lost half of one of the most important features to a person. That day when the boys turned on me we got into an intense fight. Long story short I woke up the next day with a concussion, a broken hand and an eye patch over my left eye. I don't know how they did it but I woke up only being able to see through my right eye."

I look at him shocked. Now everything makes sense, his sunglasses he always wears, his hand on a person to lead him and that note on his first day of school. He can't see out of one eye.

He is half blind.

And it's all the jocks fault.
