i woke up happy,that is an under statement,i was ecstatic, today was my fortieth birthday,i have a beautiful wife,three kids,and a well paying job.
I was expecting my wife to jump out singing Happy birthday anytime soon,i stretched and yawned a smile forming on my face,then i crept back under the cover,so as not to ruin her surprise and still appear sleeping. I patiently waited, five minutes passed,ten,i started to loose patience. I decided to run a quick bath,maybe the surprise was downstairs. i got showered and dressed for work.
when i got downstairs i saw my kids eating at the dinning,"morning dad"they greeted, i waited for a happy birthday,nothing?,that was it?""morning kids"i said trying not to sound hurt,how could they forget their dads birthday. I went into the kitchen and saw my wife cooking,"honey"i said walking in"you wont believe the kids forgot my"..."please tom,i'm running late"my wife said cutting me off"i have to get the kids to school"she said picking up the keys on the counter. She gave me a quick peck on the cheeks"i made pancakes,bacon,eggs,help yourself"she said rushing out"kids lets go"."bye dad"they chorused,"yeah bye"i replied giving a small wave.
was i dreaming? i went to the calendar by the the fridge,i wasn't mistaking, today was my birthday,"i can't believe my wife forgot. i ate and decided to go to work feeling so sad.
I was to sad to reply the good mornings and happy birthdays i received on my way to the office,i just gave them a curt nod. When i got into my office, i saw a large bouquet of flowers,a birthday card,a cup of coffee and cookies with smiley faces on them..."hmmm"i thought,maybe my wife did remember after all i picked up the card,just as Stacey entered. Stacey has been my personal assistant for two months now,she had long blond hair,was very pretty and curvy."good morning Mr Hunter"she said smiling,""good morning Stacey"i replied taking a sit."aren't you in a good mood"she said pointing a well manicured finger at me,"i chuckled "of course,i am,its my birthday"i replied."that means you like the flowers and card i bought?"she said placing her hand on her hips. my eyebrows shot up"you did this"i asked waving over my table,"of course,who else has a key to your office"she replied,her smile broadening,"wow"i said "thanks so much,you didn't have to "...."shhhhh its okay"she said placing a finger on my lips"lets just sat its my way of saying thank you for being a great boss,oh and you have a meeting in thirty minutes"and with that she left.
"at least somebody remembered"i thought and stared preparing for the meeting with God knows who. The rest of the morning was a blur,even my mum didn't remember to call me,and she never forgets. closing hours came and i started,packing my things getting ready to go home when Stacey piped her head in,"hey you doing something,afterwards?"she asked sweetly uh mm i was about to refuse when i remembered my family didn't even remember that today was my birthday,so i said the two lettered word that destroyed my whole life till this moment "No".
Stacey and i were seated in a dimly lit restaurant,she was funny and had a great sense of humor,i began to see her in a new light, i started noticing things i never did before,like how perfect her teeth were,how blue her eyes were,she even had dimples. she was fun to be around with,she told me about her family,and she didn't mention a boyfriend. Soon we were done eating and were walking towards my car,"can i give you a ride home?"i asked smiling at her,"if it not to much,then sure "she replied,we got into my car,it was silent but comfortable,i wanted to ask her out on another date,but i didn't know how she'd feel about it,she knew i had a wife and they were very friendly to each other, soon we got to the front of her house,i parked and she surprised me by asking in the most beautiful voice"do you want to come in for coffee " now how could i say no to that,so i answered "yes I'll love to".
Her house was warm and said a lot about her,it was homey i loved it instantly,"nice place you got here"i said casually,"thanks"she replied. she looked at me and i saw a spark in her eye,i knew we both wanted the same thing,i moved closer to her,seems like i was gonna get more than coffee,but before i could reply,she said almost in a whisper,let me change into something more comfortable,and with that she walked upstairs,"oh my freaking God"i murmured,how could my day turn from lame to absolutely fantastic, i was so geared up. and so i later for Stacey to come back so we could have the best night of our lives. fifteen minutes later i heard Stacey's voice from up the stairs,"I'm back"she said with a singsong voice,"I'm ready"i replied her with the same voice,but what i saw wasn't what i expected,there stood my wife,my kids,my mum,my best friend,and some of my work mates with matching grins all yelling "Surprise!!!"and there i stood, shocked beyond comprehension,
